Stocks Going Ex Dividend the Second Week of March

Here is our latest update on the stock trading technique called 'Buying Dividends'. This is the process of buying stocks before the ex dividend date and selling the stock shortly after the ex date at about the same price, yet still being entitled to the dividend. This technique generally works only in bull markets. In flat or choppy markets, you have to be extremely careful, and may need to avoid the technique during those times.

In order to be entitled to the dividend, you have to buy the stock before the ex-dividend date, and you can't sell the stock until after the ex date. The actual dividend may not be paid for another few weeks. WallStreetNewsNetwork.com has compiled a downloadable and sortable list of the stocks going ex dividend during the next week or two. The list contains many dividend paying companies, all with market caps over $500 million, and yields over 2%. Here are a few examples showing the stock symbol, the ex-dividend date, the yield, and the market capitalization.

Private Equity Companies Yield More than 5%

Private equity is usually limited to the very wealthy and large institutions. Fortunately, the average investor can also get in on the action since there are many publicly traded private equity firms. The private equity companies provide working capital to smaller companies that are not publicly traded, in the hopes of improving revenues and earnings with a goal of profiting through bringing the companies public through an Initial Public Offering, also known as an IPO, or just reselling the companies to larger firms. Private equity companies also often provide loans to these companies.

Private equity companies, venture capital funds, and business development corporations are generally considered part of the same investment category, primarily due to the fact that these investment vehicles allow investors to get in on the ground floor of private companies before they go public. Once the companies in the portfolios have an IPO, the returns can be substantial.

A Business Development Corporation, also known as a Business Development Company or BDC, is similar to a publicly traded private equity fund. Many private equity companies are registered as BDCs for tax advantages, generally paying no corporate income tax because at least 90 percent of their income, profits, and capital gains are paid out as taxable dividends to investors.

If you are wondering how you cn invest in these, WallStreetNewsNetwork.com recently updated its list of over 25 publicly traded Business Development Corporations and Private Equity Companies, most of which pay high yields, with yields ranging from 3.4% to in excess of 10%.

One example is TICC Capital (TICC), a BDC that has been paying dividends quarterly since 2004, and yields 11.0%. Last Fall, the company boosted its dividend payout rate by 7.4%. The stock has a price to earnings ratio of 6.2 and a forward PE of 8.6. Revenues for the latest quarter were up 40.6%. The company invests in secured and unsecured senior debt, subordinated debt, junior subordinated debt, preferred stock, and common stock of both private and public companies, specializing in technology, media, telecommunications, and medical equipment. The company has invested in NetQuote, Inc., the web-based portal for insurance companies and consumers, StayOnline, Inc. a provider of wireless high-speed Internet access solutions for the lodging industry, and Ai Squared, a manufacturer of assistive technology software which makes the screen magnification program ZoomText.

BlackRock Kelso Capital Corporation (BKCC) which a private equity firm founded in 2005 which specializes in investing in middle market companies with EBITDA or operating cash flow between $10 million and $50 million. The firm has invested in such companies as American SportWorks, Fitness Together, Grocery Outlet, Heartland Automotive Services, InterMedia Outdoors, Pre-Paid Legal Services, Renaissance Learning, and Sentry Security Systems. The stock trades at 12.1 times trailing earnings and 10.2 times forward earnings. It sports a yield of 9.8% and pays its dividends quarterly.

Ares Capital (ARCC) is a private equity company that trades at 11 times forward earnings and yields 9.4%, and THL Credit (TCRD) has a 10.8 forward price to earnings ratio and pays a yield of 8.8%.

A list of over 25 high yield business development companies and private equity firms, which can be downloaded, sorted, and updated, is available from WallStreetNewsNetwork.com. Several of these companies pay dividends monthly and more than a dozen have yields greater than 8%.

Utility Stocks are On the Move

Did you know that utility stocks are up 7.7% for the last three months, based on the Dow Jones Utility Average? Not bad for income producing investments. Electric utilities are often considered a conservative play on the recession recovery. Businesses expand, use more electricity. New housing developments create new power customers.

And of course the best feature for income investors, is of course the income. There are over 20 high yield electric utilities with dividend payout rates of 4% or more, according to WallStreetNewsNetwork.com. As an example, Integrys Energy Group (TEG) an energy holding company, markets natural gas and electricity to customers in Chicago, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan. The company posted a 78% increase in quarterly earnings on flat revenues. The stock has a forward price to earnings ratio of 16 and a yield of 4.8%. The company reports earnings on February 28.

Southern Company (SO) is another high yielder based in Atlanta, Georgia. Earnings were up 46.7% for the latest quarter, on a 0.2% rise in revenues. The stock trades at 15 times forward earnings, and pay a generous yield of 4.4%.

TECO Energy (TE) provides electric energy to the growing economy of Florida. The stock pays a generous yield of 5.2%, with payments made quarterly. Unfortunately, earnings for the latest quarter were down 15% on an 8% drop in revenues.

For a free list of high yield electric utilities, that hows stock ticker symbols, price to earnings ratios, and yields, go to WallStreetNewsNetwork.com.

What Do All Those Designations Mean that your Financial Advisor Has?

You have certainly seen several of those two-letter, three-letter, and four-letter designations after the names of your financial advisers. These common ones include CPA, EA, CFA, CFP, CLU, and ChFA. But have you ever heard of AAMS, ATA, AWMA, C(k)P, C3DWP, CCC, CDFA, CMAA, CPWA (2 different designations with the same initials), CSA, DIA, EHBA, FSS, LUTCF, QFP, and many dozens more. These also include such designations as Certified Professional Divorce Practitioner and Qualified Kingdom Advisor.

If you ever want to know what any of these designations mean, who issues them, and what education and qualification requirements are, you can go to the Understanding Professional Designations web page at the FINRA web site.

Follow-up on Cosmetic Surgery Stocks

Two weeks ago on January 30, I published an article on the companies involved in the products and services of cosmetic surgery and the related industries. Three of the four stocks that were described are up big time.

One of the companies was Cynosure (CYNO), which produces Smartlipo® LaserBodySculpting™ Workstations used for treating localized fat deposits using a minimally invasive technique. The stock closed at 26.40 on that day and is now trading at 28.13, a 6.6% increase in only a couple weeks.

Another company that was mentioned is Align Technology (ALGN) makes the Invisilign systems, an invisible orthodontics process for straightening teeth. The stock was at 29.27 at that time, and is now 33.02, a substantial 12.8% increase.

PhotoMedex (PHMD), which makes XTRAC laser products for psoriasis and vitiligo, NEOVA for premature skin aging, and Omnilux Light-emitting diode for wrinkles, has risen 7.9%.

The only company mentioned that hasn't performed is Solta Medical (SLTM), a producer of the Thermage CPT non-invasive treatment for skin tightening. The stock has dropped 10 cents during the last couple weeks. Many of the other cosmetic surgery stocks on the free list at WallStreetNewsNetwork.com have already started to take off. This could be one of the major industries for the decade.

Economics in Two Lessons

Economics in Two Lessons

Lesson # 1:
US Tax revenue: $2,170,000,000,000
Federal budget: $3,820,000,000,000
New debt: $1,650,000,000,000
National debt: $14,271,000,000,000
Recent budget cuts: $38,500,000,000
Let's now remove 8 zeros and pretend it's a household budget:

 * Annual family income: $21,700
 * Money the family spent: $38,200
 * New debt on the credit card: $16,500
 * Outstanding balance on the credit card: $142,710
 * Total budget cuts so far: $38.50

 Got it ?????

 Lesson # 2:

Here's another way to look at the debt ceiling:

Let's say you come home from work and find there has been a sewer backup in your neighborhood... and your home has sewage all the way up to your ceilings.

What do you think you should do?

Raise the ceilings, or remove the crap?

Top Retailer Short Squeeze Plays for Stock Traders

A short squeeze takes place when an excessive amount of short sellers have shorted a stock, the stock comes out with good news, and the price of the stock spikes by an excessive amount, because all the short sellers have to scramble to cover their positions by buying in their shares, often due to the fact that they are getting margin calls.

Potential short squeeze plays have several metrics for comparison purposes. One of the most popular metrics is the Short Interest Ratio, also known as the Days to Cover. What this measures is the number of days it would take the short sellers to cover their positions based on the average daily trading volume. The longer it would take to cover, the higher the ratio. Another analysis is the number of shares short as a percentage of float. The higher the percentage, the greater the chance that an upside shock would drive up the price.

The retailer sector has many short squeeze plays to choose from, whether it's retailing technology or retailing food. Here are some examples. Shown is the name of the company and the short interest ratio, in other words the number of days it would take the short sellers to cover their positions based on recent volume.

If Rates Rise to 6% Apple Should Rise to 537

This is obviously a quick-and-dirty analysis, but based on the following assumptions, if money market rates spike from almost zero to 6%, Apple (AAPL) should increase to 537 a share, assuming no increase in operating earnings whatsoever. Apple has a huge cash position, generally referred to as $137 billion, although technically that amount includes other marketable investments.

Assuming a 6% rate on those funds, this would generate 8.22 billion in interest income. Divide that by 939.06 million shares outstanding, and that comes out to new earnings of 8.75 per share. Reduce that number by the company's current effective tax rate of 26% and you come up with 6.48 per share. Add that to the current per share earnings of 44.11 and it results in 50.59 of earnings per share.

Remember, no additional growth of earnings due to higher revenues have been factored in. You take the 50.59 earnings per share, multiply it times the current price to earnings ratio of 10.62 and you get a price of 537.24 per share.

Disclosure: Author owns AAPL.

Dividend definitions:

Declaration date: the day that the company declares that there is going to be an upcoming dividend.

Ex-dividend date: the day on which if you buy the stock, you would not be entitled to that particular dividend; or the first day on which a shareholder can sell the shares and still be entitled to the dividend.

Monthly Dividend Stock List

Record date: the day when you must be on the company's books as a shareholder to receive the dividend. The ex-dividend date is normally set for stocks two business days before the record date.

Payment date: the day on which the dividend payment is actually made, which can be as long at two months after the ex date.

Don't forget to reconfirm the ex-dividend date with the company before implementing this technique.
