What Stocks the Presidential Candidates Own

This has probably been the wildest election year in the history of the United States. What makes it interesting from a financial standpoint is that the candidates file an OGE Form 278 Public Financial Disclosure Report. By seeing what they own, maybe you can glean what will happen to these stocks if they get elected. Here are the investment holdings as of the candidates' latest filings.

Hillary Clinton (Democrat)
Hillary Clinton
Hillary Clinton has a couple of Northwestern Mutual cash value whole life insurance policies, plus a universal life policy through AIG (AIG). She also has over $5,000,000 in cash in a J.P Morgan (JPM) account. In addition, she owns over $5,000,000 of the Vanguard 500 Index Fund (VFINX).

And that's basically it in terms of investment assets. However, she has received millions of dollars in honorariums from numerous companies, many of which are publicly traded, such as eBay (EBAY), Qualcomm (QCOM), and Salesforce.com (CRM).

Donald Trump (Republican)
Donald Trump
Donald Trump's form seems to go on forever, pages and pages of stock holdings. Instead of listing every one of them (around 600 listings), I've decided to list just a few of the stocks that he owns.

Agrium
AT&T (T)
Bank of Montreal
CenturyLink
Freeport-McMoran
General Electric (GE)
GlaxoSmithKline
Halliburton
International Paper
Mosaic
Pepsico (PEP)
Raytheon
Seadrill
Transocean
Verizon (VZ)
Wal Mart (WMT)
Apple (AAPL)
Caterpillar (CAT)
VISA
Gilead
Waste Management
Yahoo
Amgen
Philip Morris
UPS
MasterCard
Pfizer
Amazon (AMZN)
Costco
Disney (DIS)
Google (GOOGL)
Microsoft (MSFT)
Nike (NKE)
and the list goes on and on

Bernie Sanders (Democrat)
Bernie Sanders
It appears that Bernie Sanders doesn't own any stocks or investments. However, his wife owns over a dozen VALIC mutual funds. She also owns four Vanguard funds, each amounting to somewhere between $1,000 and $15,000 each.

Gary Johnson (Libertarian)
Gary Johnson
The financial statement for Gary Johnson, the Libertarian candidate and former Governor of New Mexico, is not as up-to-date as the other three candidates. He owns lots of real estate including interests in motels and office buildings. In addition, he owns over 509,000 shares of Cannabis Sativa Inc. (CBDS).

If you want to see the real forms, you can check them out at OpenSecrets.org.

Looking for some interesting moves in some stocks this week? Check out the companies that will be reporting earnings this week.

If earnings exceed analysts' expectations, the stocks can shoot up. If the numbers underperform, the stock can tank. Then again, occasionally, stocks don't move the way you would have expected.

Anyway, many traders use earnings plays for trading strategies. Also, option traders look for high implied volatility of stocks for for option selling strategies.

Here are many of the stocks reporting earnings this week:

Tuesday
CMI
CVS
MYL
PFE

Wednesday

Top Stocks for Day Traders

Beta is one measurement of risk. Beta, also known as the beta coefficient, measures how the expected return of a stock is correlated to the performance of the stock market as a whole. A positive beta, such as a 1 or 2, means that the stock usually tracks the market in general. A zero beta means that the stock price is not correlated with the stock market at all. And a negative beta means that the stock tracks the market inversely.

A beta of 1 means the stock tracks the market directly, e.g. 1% rise in the market means 1% rise for the stock. The higher the beta, the more riskier the stock, yet the greater the return potential. For example, if the stock market increases by 3%, a stock with a beta of 2 should increase by 6%, twice as much. So for day traders, high beta stocks may be the way to go.

The following stocks have betas above 3, PE ratios less than 20, PEG ratios less than 1, and market caps greater than $500 million.

Pier 1 Imports, Inc. ( PIR ) has a beta of 4.3 . It has a PE of 11.4 and a PEG ratio of 0.62 .

Dana Holding Corporation ( DAN ) has a beta of 4.2 . It has a PE of 8.6 and a PEG ratio of 0.67 .

ACCO Brands Corporation ( ACCO ) has a beta of 3.8 . It has a PE of 6.4 and a PEG ratio of 0.69 .

Unisys Corporation ( UIS ) has a beta of 3.8 . It has a PE of 4.8 and a PEG ratio of 0.48 .

Sonic Automotive Inc ( SAH ) has a beta of 3.5 . It has a PE of 13.7 and a PEG ratio of 0.70 .

Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group, Inc. ( DTG ) has a beta of 3.5 . It has a PE of 13.9 and a PEG ratio of 0.93 .

American International Group, Inc. ( AIG ) has a beta of 3.4 . It has a PE of 3.0 and a PEG ratio of 0.21 .

Office Depot Inc ( ODP ) has a beta of 3.4 . It has a PE of 10.6 and a PEG ratio of 0.96 .

Tenneco Inc. ( TEN ) has a beta of 3.3 . It has a PE of 10.4 and a PEG ratio of 0.41 .

Valassis Communications, Inc. ( VCI ) has a beta of 3.1 . It has a PE of 11.1 and a PEG ratio of 0.88 .

Another way to get a much higher return than the performance of a sector or industry, without buying on margin, is by using Ultra Bullish ETFs, a list of which can be found at WallStreetNewsNetwork.com.

AIG Paying $ Millions More in Bonuses

Here we go again. AIG is asking the government for permission to pay millions of dollars more in bonuses to top company executives. When will it stop? This company has received over $100 billion in US Government, I mean US taxpayers bailouts.

AIG Bonuses Allegedly $53 million Higher Than Initially Disclosed

According to the attorney general of Connecticut Richard Blumenthal, AIG (AIG) bonuses that were paid by the company were actually $218 million, not $165 million to staff in the financial products unit. AIG has reportedly received about $182.5 billion in federal bailout funds.

Because of this, Congress is now trying to pass a bill to tax the AIG bonuses at 90%. This is not the right way for the government to get even, and sets a bad precedent. What the government should do is spelled out in my previous article, What's the Matter With AIG?, which included several steps the government should take. If necessary, have the company go through a structured bankruptcy.

WaMu Sues US Government

First, AIG (AIG) sues the US Government for a refund of taxes paid. Now the holding company for Washington Mutual is suing the FDIC, saying that the company was worth more than what JPMorgan Chase (JPM) paid for it.

The AIG Counterparties

The AIG counterparties that AIG (AIG) made payments to included about ten banks that are foreign companies. AIG has published a list on their web site. This is a follow-up to the What is the Matter with AIG article posted yesterday.

What is the Matter with AIG?

It was just last week that I wrote about how much of the AIG (AIG) bailout money went to European banks. Now we hear about how they are planning on paying $1.2 billion in bonuses, and this money is reportedly going towards the derivatives trading staff, which got them into trouble in the first place.

The outrageousness is unbelievable!!! The stock sells for pennies yet they have received over $11 per share in bailout money! And by the way, whatever happened to the fraud investigation of AIG that started in 2007?

I get asked by readers, what should the government do for AIG instead of the bailouts? Here is the answer:
1. The government should immediately offer to back any life and disability insurance policies and annuities of AIG.
2. Since the government is "80% owner of the company", it should immediately vote out all the members of the Board of Directors, put in their own directors, who should in turn, terminate and replace all top executives.
3. The government should immediately clawback any and all bonuses paid to executives of the company over the last three years.
4. It goes without saying that no bonuses should be paid whatsoever. It AIG can't get out of their "bonus contracts", then the government, as "80% owner", should have the company declare bankruptcy immediately.
5. The government should take back all the bailout funds it can possibly recover that it gave to the company. The government is going to need all the funds it can get to back all of AIG's life insurance policies.
6. After all the above is done, the government should then look for a buyer of the "company" or its "assets".

Disclosure: Author is embarrassed and ashamed to admit he owns AIG, and he would rather have the stock go to zero than have the company receive any bailout money.
