This Flashlight Runs on Water: Time for Water Stocks?

Would you believe that there is a flashlight that doesn't need batteries installed? As a matter of fact, this flashlight runs only on water. It is called the Eton BlackoutBuddy H20 The Always-Ready Water-Activated Emergency Light and it can stay lit for 72 hours straight, just by dipping it in a small cup of water. It can be stored for ten years and can even be used underwater. It is even environmentally conscious, as it does not contain mercury, hexavalent chromium, cadmium, or lead. The product is expected to be released shortly.

So if we have water powering our flashlights, will water soon be powering our cars? How about our homes? How about investing in water? Obviously, water is a very valuable commodity. We need it to drink, to wash, to grow our crops, to use in industrial applications, and numerous other uses. And the source of water for consumer and commercial use either comes from government water districts, private companies, or several publicly traded water utility stocks.

One example is Connecticut Water Service (CTWS) which serves over 120,000 customers in Connecticut and Maine. The stock trades at 17 times both trailing and forward earnings. For the latest quarter, earnings spiked by a huge 73.8% on a 12.9% revenue rise. The company, which is over half a century old, pays a healthy 3.1% yield.

Another example is The York Water Company (YORW), which has a trailing price to earnings ratio of 26 and a forward PE of 22. Earnings were up 17.7% for the latest quarter year-over-year on an increase of 9.6% in sales. The company is an old one, founded in 1816, and serves numerous municipalities in Pennsylvania. The stock pays a decent yield of 3.0%.

Several other water utilities are available to investors, such as American Water Works (AWK) which yields 2.6% and American States Water (AWR) paying 2.8%. The list of water utility stocks can be found at WallStreetNewsNetwork.com, which can be downloaded, sorted, and updated. Why not dip your toe into one of these companies. It may clench the thirst of your portfolio.

The Waterfall of Water Stocks

Income investors who invest in electric and gas utilities are always looking for ways to diversify, yet still get a decent yield. What better way to branch out than to invest in water utilities. Compared to electric utilities which require the purchase of fuel to run their generators, water utilities are a simple concept. Take the water which occurs freely and pump it out to the customers. Of course, this is over-simplifying as water companies are involved in water treatment, developing water treatment plants, storage facilities, dams, and pumping stations.

Based on the free list of water utility stocks at WallStreetNewsNetwork.com, there are ten stocks, all with yields of 3% or more. An example is American Water (AWK), which is a New Jersey based company that provides drinking water and wastewater services to 30 states and 2 Canadian provinces. The stock trades at 15.7 times forward earnings and generates a yield of 3%. Earnings for the latest quarter were up an unbelievable 59.2% on a 3.7% increase in revenues.

Middlesex Water Co. (MSEX) is another water utility that has been around for over a century, as it was founded in 1897. The company primarily serves New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania. The stock has a forward price to earnings ratio of 17.8, which is a bit on the high side, however, it pays a generous yield of 4.1%. Earnings were down over 31% for the latest quarter, on a revenue drop of 1.9%.

SJW Corp. (SJW) based in San Jose, California, provides water to the area around Silicon Valley. Investors receive a yield of 3.1% and the stock carries a forward price to earnings ratio of 17.5. The high tech area serves the company well, as quarterly earnings were up an outrageous 81.8% on a 17.1% revenue increase. WallStreetNewsNetwork.com just updated its free list of dividend paying water utility stocks, which shows the price to earnings ratio, and the yield.

Will High Yield Water Stocks Clench Your Thirst?

Recently, there has been significant discussion in the press about moving water from flood hit areas to drought stricken areas. Unfortunately, it wouldn't really be feasible due to the extremely high costs to build a pipeline and the inability to predict where the next flood will take place.

There are almost a dozen water utility stocks with dividends that were turned up by WallStreetNewsNetwork.com on their water utility list that was just updated.

American Water Works Co., Inc. (AWK) is a New Jersey based distributor of water in 35 states and two Canadian provinces. The stock trades at 16 times forward earnings, with a decent 3.1% yield. Earnings for the quarter were up an amazing 16.2% from the previous quarter on a 6.2% increase in revenues.

SJW Corp. (SJW) is a San Jose, California based water distributor which serves the Silicon Valley area and has customers in Cupertino, San Jose, Campbell, Monte Sereno, Saratoga, Los Gatos, and parts of Santa Clara County. The stock trades at 19.5 times forward earnings and pays a yield of 3.0%.

Creating Water Out of Thin Air: Will It Hurt Water Stocks

The German organization, Fraunhofer Alliance SysWasser, has come up with a way of creating drinking water out of air, using sustainable water system technologies. The self-sufficient process utilizes solar collectors and photovoltaic cells, and works especially well in the desert.

So what will this new process do to the current water utilities? Probably not much, at least for now. American consumers prefer to get their drinking water through pipes, or better yet, out of bottles. So water utilities can still be considered a favorable investment.

Water stocks provide good income diversification along with a portfolio of electric utilities and natural gas utilities. Water utilities offer decent yields ranging from 2% to 5%. There are about a dozen water utility stocks with dividends, that were turned up by WallStreetNewsNetwork.com on their water stock list. Here are some examples.

Water, Water Everywhere: Top Yielding Water Utility Stocks

Many years ago, I started investing in water utilities. I figured that any company that can sell something as abundant as water, must be in a pretty good business. As it turned out every water stock I invested in got taken over by another company, at a price per share much higher than what I paid for it. I still own a couple (see my disclosure below).

Water utilities may not pay a yield as high as electric utilities or gas utilities, but there are over a dozen water utility stocks with yields ranging from 1.7% to 4.7% that were turned up by WallStreetNewsNetwork.com. Here are some examples.

American Water Works Company (AWK) is a $3.94 billion market cap water utility which yields 3.7%. The company provides water and wastewater services in 32 states and Ontario, Canada. The stock has a forward PE of 15.7.

Aqua America Inc. (WTR) has a market cap of $2.41 billion, and serves customers in Pennsylvania, Ohio, North Carolina, Illinois, Texas, New Jersey, New York, Florida, Indiana, Virginia, Maine, Missouri, and South Carolina. The stock pays a yield of 3.3% and has a forward PE of 19.7.
