Top Sports Betting Stocks

Please note that this is a sister publication of WallStreetNewsNetwork ( https://WStNN.com ) and postings will end on this site shortly.

Sports are coming back. Online betting is increasing. What companies are benefiting?

Two years ago, the Supreme Court allowed betting on sports in all states, with each state deciding whether to allow this form of gambling or not. Several states have already legalized online sports betting. Many more states are considering legislation. These changes should lead to more online gambling, and a transition from illegal gambling to legal betting.

Even NBC Sports Broadcaster Jim Kozimor mentioned in an interview that sports betting will be an extremely strong growth industry.

So if you are looking for a way to profit from sports gambling, you should look at the stocks that should benefit from the online betting on sports events.

DraftKings (DKNG) is one of the largest pure plays in the online sports betting arena. This was one of the stocks that was created from a SPAC. Revenues for this $20.6 billion market cap company were up 23.6% for the latest quarter. Earnings are minimal giving it a price to earnings ratio of over 1000.

Flutter Entertainment (PDYPY) is one of the largest daily fantasy sports providers and a leader in the legal sports betting market. The company was formerly named Paddy Power Betfair. This $25 billion market cap company trades at 47.5 times earnings.

Boyd Gaming Corp. (BYD), an operator of a company that runs over a dozen casinos across the United States, offers its B Connected Sports app in order to take advantage of increased legalization. The stock trades at 30.9 times forward earnings.

Will Legalized Online Gambling Help the Casino Stocks?

Two days before Thanksgiving, online Internet casinos opened in New Jersey, becoming the third state, in addition to Nevada and Delaware, to legalize online gaming. ('Gaming' in this article refers to gambling, not computer games.) Investors are wondering if this will help or hurt the terra firma casinos.

The Online Gambling Supporters

According to recent Bloomberg interviews, MGM Resorts International (MGM) is definitely going after online poker. Caesars Entertainment (CZR) is also a champion for online casinos.

MGM Borgata

MGM's Borgata casino in New Jersey is one of the first six casinos that received approval to offer Internet gambling. The company also owns resorts in Nevada, Michigan, and Mississippi, along with the MGM Macau Resort. The stock trades at 92 times forward earnings but generated negative earnings for the latest quarter on a 9.4% rise in revenues.

Caesars Entertainment

Caesars Entertainment is the largest casino company in the country, and owns Caesars Atlantic City in New Jersey.  It is also ne of the leaders in online gambling as it has Internet casino games in the United Kingdom, France, and Italy. Caesars has also generated negative quarterly earnings, and had a 3% drop in revenues.

Will Wynn Win?

One of the casino companies that is holding back on online gaming for now, and appears to be in better shape from a financial standpoint is Wynn Resorts (WYNN). Wynn trades at 28 times trailing earnings, 23 times forward earnings, and reported a stupendous jump of 62.5% in earnings for the quarter on a 7.1% boost in revenues. The stock even sports a decent yield of 2.5%.

Betting on Casino Stocks

Casino gaming may be experiencing major growth in the state of Massachusetts. a tentative agreement to expand gambling was reached by the state's Senate, House and Governor, which would allow three stand-alone casinos. Slot machine manufacturers should benefit, along with major casino companies that may participate, such as Las Vegas Sands (LVS).

The company trades at 18 times forward earnings, had quarterly revenue growth of 47%, and an outrageous 882% increase in quarterly earnings year over year. Of course, the percentage increase is based on very low earnings for last year. Although the company carries $10 billion in debt, it does have $3.5 billion in cash. Business has been booming for Las Vegas Sands in Macau.

Are Casino Stocks Worth a Bet?

Maryland now has its first casino, developed by Penn National Gaming Inc. (PENN). Pinnacle Entertainment Inc. (PNK) is opening a new casino in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Genting New York is developing a casino at Aqueduct. Thunder Valley Casino Resort in California is offering the first casino helicopter service in the state. The recent opening of SugarHouse Casino makes Philadelphia the largest U.S. city with casino gambling.

The gaming industry is hot, and it doesn't seem to matter whether the casino companies are making money or losing money. There are actually a couple ways to play this game: the gaming machine providers and the casinos themselves. WallStreetNewsNetwork.com has turned up over 20 of these casino stocks.

WMS Industries Inc. (WMS) is a way to play the supplier industry. It develops, makes, and markets gaming machines and video lottery terminals, including slot machines and video poker gaming machines. The stock sports a forward price to earnings ratio of 14.8, and carries a very favorable price earnings growth ratio of 0.60. Jefferies just initiated coverage with a Buy rating. The debt free company has $166 million in cash. Earnings for the latest quarter were up 18% and the next earnings announcement is scheduled for October 25.

Top Casino Support Stocks

One way to play the gambling industry is to buy casino stocks. Another way is to buy the casino support companies. These are the businesses that provide slot machines, equipment, supplies, software and services to casinos. By the way, the casino industry prefers to call it 'gaming' instead of 'gambling'. I don't like that word because when I read the words 'gaming industry', I don't know if they are talking about the 'gambling industry' or the 'video gaming industry'.

Several casino support companies are publicly traded. WallStreetNewsNetwork.com has just updated their list of all the major casino companies and casino support stocks, along with their financials.

One example is Bally Technologies, Inc. (BYI) has a very reasonable price to earnings ratio of 17.3 and forward PE of 13.8. The company makes and markets gaming devices, and computerized monitoring, accounting, and player-tracking systems. The stock has a reasonable PEG ratio of 1.03..

Another casino supporter is International Game Technology (IGT), which designs, makes and sells electronic gaming equipment and systems. The company was recently the recipient of two awards, the 'Slot Provider of the Year' Award and the 'Employer Above and Beyond Award' for Exemplary Guard and Reserve Support. In addition, the company's CEO was named to the Board of Yahoo (YHOO). The stock has a PE of 39.6 and a forward PE of 15.9, with a PEG of 1.32. In addition, it pays a yield of 1.3%.

Are Casino Stocks Worth a Bet?

Last week, when I was in Las Vegas to give a couple of speeches, I noticed how packed the city was. I thought there was a recession on, but the economic downturn seems to be over in Vegas.

According to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, during the first three months of the year, visitors to the city were up by 12%. Hotel occupancy went from 71.1% to 82.4%, and there was an amazing 48% increase in the number of conventions.

So maybe, just maybe, there is a turnaround play in the casino stocks. WallStreetNewsNetwork.com has come up with a list of all the major casino companies, along with their financials. And unfortunately, the financials for many of these stocks don't look good.

For example, Wynn Resorts (WYNN) has a very high trailing price to earnings ratio of 121 and forward PE of 47. But on the positive site, latest revenues were up over 22% and the company pays a yield of 1.2%. Wynn has Wynn Las Vegas casino resort in Las Vegas, and the and Wynn Macau casino resort located in Macau.

The Las Vegas Sands (LVS) which has casinos in Las Vegas, Macau, Singapore, and Pennsylvania, has a forward PE of 32 and a favorable price earnings to growth ratio of 0.59. Revenues were up 23.7% for the latest quarter. The company doesn't pay a dividend.

Another way to bet on the casino industry is through the manufacturers of the slot machines and the other electronic gaming machines, such as WMS Industries Inc. (WMS). The Illinois company, which has been around since 1946, has a trailing PE ratio of 26, a forward PE of 21, and a PEG ratio of 1.11. There is no dividend, but earnings were up 35.2% for the latest quarter on a revenue increase of 9.2%.
