Some recent stock promotion spam emails have been recently discovered to have subliminal messages appear in them, with the word 'Buy' flashing for less than a second, and repeated again every several seconds. The reader doesn't consciously 'see' it however the brain does see it. The spammers do this obviously to encourage the reader to buy the stock.
Subliminal messages were used in movie theaters in the 1950's when they flashed pictures of popcorn on the screen to make the theater-goers hungry. This practice was later banned.
