Highest Yielding Marijuana Cannabis Pot Stocks

Please note that this is a sister publication of WallStreetNewsNetwork ( http://WStNN.com ) and eventually everything on this site will be transferred over there.
by Fred Fuld III
You may have seen some of the major gains in some of the marijuana stocks and wanted to jump on the bandwagon. As an example, Cronos (CRON) has increased by 13% so far this year and Aurora (ACB) rose 26% even after experiencing a big drop during the last six months.
Maybe you are a relatively conservative investor and you want to receive a dividend in return for the risk you are taking. Fortunately, there are several cannabis stocks that provide investors with a yield.
Scotts Miracle-Gro Company (SMG) has a couple divisions in the marijuana industry. Its Hawthorne Gardening Co. subsidiary purchased General Hydroponics which makes and markets products for the pot growers. The company has also invested in the hydroponics company AeroGrow International (AERO) which markets to the small scale grower. Scotts’ current yield is 2.17%, with the latest dividend of 58 cents paid September 10 (today), an incense of 5.5% over the previous quarter. The dividend has increased on an annual basis since 2015.
AbbVie Inc. (ABBV), the marketer of Marinol also known as Dronabinol, a form of tetrahydrocannabinol, one of the main psychoactive ingredients of marijuana. The company has been paying quarterly dividends and has increased the annual dividend every year since 2013. AbbVie’s annual forward dividend yield is 6.28%. The company’s most recent dividend is $1.07 per share, which will be paid to investors on November 15, 2019 to shareholders of record on October 11.
Innovative Industrial Properties Inc. (IIPR), which trades on the New York Stock Exchange,  owns, manages, and leases properties to state licensed cannabis growing facilities. Annual dividends since 2017 were 55 cents, $1.20, and $2.40. The dividends are paid quarterly, currently 60 cents per share, up from 45 cents for the previous quarter, an increase of 33%. The company pays a dividend yield of 2.79%.
Altria (MO) is the tobacco company that manufactures and markets cigarettes and smokeless tobacco. The company invested over a billion dollars in Cronos Group (CRON), the Canadian marijuana company. The stock has a forward yield of 7.9%.
Molson Coors (TAP) is the seventh largest brewer in the world. The company is in partnership with HEXO (HEXO) to produce cannabis-infused beverages in Canada. Molson Coors yields 4.03%.
Horizons Marijuana Life Sciences Index ETF (HMLSF) is an exchange traded fund that invests in many companies involved in the marijuana industry. It has a yield of 7.54%.
Constellation Brands (STZ), the beer, wine, and liquor producer, has a significant ownership in the Ontario, Canada based cannabis company Canopy Growth (CGC). Constellation has a dividend yield of 1.44%.
Let’s hope some of these stocks get high, and provide you with a smoking portfolio.

Why You Should Buy Stocks with a High Tax Rate

If you are looking for a short term speculation or a long term investment, you may want to look for stocks that are currently paying a high tax rate. Why?
According to the Tax Policy Institute, President-Elect Donald Trump has proposed a substantially reduced rate of 15% for corporations. What that means for stocks is that if companies are currently paying taxes at a high rate, they will benefit significantly from tax savings that will flow to the bottom line.
Surprisingly there are some companies that have a tax rate in excess of 60% (e.g. Amazon (AMZN)), according to a report by Wallet Hub. This includes state taxes.
Here are some of the hight overall tax bracket stocks, which may warrant further investigation.
Comcast (CMCSA) 37.1%
Home Depot (HD) 36.4
Norfolk Southern (NSC) 36.3%
Altria (MO) 35.1%
Verizon (VZ) 34.9%
Emerson Electric (EMR) 34.3%
Do your homework and your own due diligence. Hopefully, a corporate tax break with benefit your portfolio.
Disclosure: Author owns AMZN.

Do 'Bad' Stocks Do Better than 'Good' Stocks?

Investors who aren't concerned about what businesses their investments are in might want to consider investing in 'bad' stocks, often referred to as 'vice stocks' or 'sin stocks', and now are referred to as the supposedly politically correct term, 'barrier stocks.' They are now called that because the industries have a barrier to entry. The industries include tobacco, alcohol, gambling, defense, adult entertainment, and other businesses that have negative connotations by many investors.

As a matter of fact, there is a mutual fund that used to be called the Vice Fund, but is now called the USA Mutuals Barrier Investor

Fund. (VICEX). Over the last year, the fund has significantly outperformed the S&P 500, rising 3.26% versus a drop of 2.36% for the S&P. Even over five years and ten years, the fund has outperformed the stock market in general. Year-to-date, the fund is up 3.69% versus a loss in the S&P.

If you are wondering what sort of stocks are in the Barrier Fund portfolio, here are the top eight holding:

Philip Morris International Inc (PM)
Reynolds American Inc (RAI)
Las Vegas Sands Corp. (LVS)
Altria Group, Inc. (MO)
MGM Resorts International (MGM)
Raytheon Company (RTN)
Wynn Resorts (WYNN)
General Dynamics Corp (GD)

Each of these stocks represent anywhere from 3% to 6% of the portfolio.

Rydex Leisure (RYLIX) is a fund that owns several stocks that are considered 'bad' or not so good, such as Philip Morris, Altria, and Reynolds American. It also owns McDonald's (MCD) as some investors consider fast food to be not-so-good.

Another fund that has occasionally been put in the vice fund category includes Fidelity Select Consumer Staples (FDFAX), which owns British American Tobacco, Reynolds American, and Altria. It also owns Pepsico (PEP) and Coca Cola (KO), which many consider not-so-good due to the sale of sugary drinks.

If you are not concerned about how your investment funds are used, buying the 'bad' stocks might be a 'good' strategy.

Disclosure: Author owns MCD, PEP, & KO.

Over 45 Stocks Going Ex Dividend the Second Week of September

Here is our latest update on the stock trading technique called 'Buying Dividends'. This is the process of buying stocks before the ex dividend date and selling the stock shortly after the ex date at about the same price, yet still being entitled to the dividend. This technique generally works only in bull markets. In flat or choppy markets, you have to be extremely careful, and may need to avoid the technique during those times.

In order to be entitled to the dividend, you have to buy the stock before the ex-dividend date, and you can't sell the stock until after the ex date. The actual dividend may not be paid for another few weeks. WallStreetNewsNetwork.com has compiled a downloadable and sortable list of the stocks going ex dividend during the next week or two. The list contains many dividend paying companies, all with market caps over $500 million, and yields over 2%. Here are a few examples showing the stock symbol, the ex-dividend date, the yield, and the market capitalization.

Hewlett-Packard Company (HPQ) 9/10/12 3.0% $34.7B Public Storage (PSA) 9/10/12 3.1% $24.5B Ameren Corp (AEE) 9/10/12 4.8% $8.1B MDU Resources Group Inc (MDU) 9/11/12 3.0% $4.2B Golar LNG Limited (GLNG) 9/11/12 3.3% $3.3B Altria Group, Inc. (MO) 9/12/12 5.2% $69.3B Rogers Communications Inc. (RCI) 9/12/12 3.9% $16.3B Shaw Communications Inc. (SJR) 9/12/12 4.8% $8.5B Garmin Ltd. (GRMN) 9/12/12 4.4% $8.4B NYSE Euronext (NYX) 9/12/12 4.8% $6.2B Rayonier Inc. (RYN) 9/12/12 3.6% $5.9B

The additional ex-dividend stocks can be found at wsnn.com. (If you have been to the website before, and the latest link doesn't show up, you may have to empty your cache.) If you like dividend stocks, you should check out the high yield utility stocks and the Monthly Dividend Stocks at WallStreetNewsNetwork.com or WSNN.com.

Dividend definitions:

Declaration date: the day that the company declares that there is going to be an upcoming dividend.

Ex-dividend date: the day on which if you buy the stock, you would not be entitled to that particular dividend; or the first day on which a shareholder can sell the shares and still be entitled to the dividend.

Monthly Dividend Stock List

Record date: the day when you must be on the company's books as a shareholder to receive the dividend. The ex-dividend date is normally set for stocks two business days before the record date.

Payment date: the day on which the dividend payment is actually made, which can be as long at two months after the ex date.

Buying Dividends (Dividend Capture) book 25% Off

Don't forget to reconfirm the ex-dividend date with the company before implementing this technique.

Socially Irresponsible High Yield Stocks

Many investors and a few mutual funds will purposely avoid investing in certain companies that are in industries that are not considered socially responsible, such as Alcohol, Animal Testing, Weapons, Gambling, Tobacco, Oil, Coal, and Nuclear Energy. However, stocks in one of these industries, cigarettes and tobacco, the yields re quite high.

Cigarettes are still selling well, in spite of the cigarette pack warnings, in spite of the anti-smoking cigarette commercials, and in spite of the upcoming gross anti-smoking warnings that are expected to appear on cigarette packages.

I don't smoke and I don't ever remember investing in a tobacco company. But there are investors who are just primarily concerned about the financials of a company, as opposed to the company's products. There are actually ten publicly traded cigarette and tobacco companies, most of which pay decent dividends, that have been turned up by WallStreetNewsNetwork.com. Yields range from 3.5% to 9.3%.

One example is Lorillard, Inc. (LO) has a dividend payout rate of 4.5%. The stock, which markets the Newport, Kent, True, Maverick, Old Gold, and Max brands, trades at 14 times forward earnings.

Altria Group Inc. (MO), which is a Virginia based company that makes and markets cigarettes, cigars, and beer. It is the largest cigarette company by market cap in the US. The stock has a forward price to earning ratio of 13.5, and pays a very generous yield of 5.5%. The company's brands include Marlboro, Virginia Slims, Parliament, Benson & Hedges, Basic, L&M, Copenhagen, Skoal, Red Seal, and Husky.

Reynolds American Inc. (RAI) makes and markets cigarettes and other tobacco products including the Camel, Kool, Pall Mall, Doral, Winston, Salem, Misty, Capri, Dunhill, and Natural American Spirit brands. The stock has a forward PE ratio of 13.1, and pays a nice yield of 5.4%.

For a free list of all the high yield tobacco stocks, which can be downloaded, sorted, and updated, go to WallStreetNewsNetwork.com. Also, if you haven't seen the Graphic Color Anti Smoking Pictures to Appear on Cigarette Packs, you should check them out.

Gross Cigarette Warnings Delay May Help Tobacco Stocks

Remember those gross anti-smoking warnings that were supposed to appear on cigarette packages? Well the tobacco companies have won a temporary delay from a U.S. District Judge giving the court more time to review the FDA mandate.

Obviously, many investors wouldn't touch these stocks with a twenty foot cigarette holder. Other investors, who don't have concerns, like the 'bad company discount' which tends to give tobacco stocks a higher yield than stocks of other industries. There are ten publicly traded cigarette and tobacco companies, almost all of which pay dividends, that have been turned up by WallStreetNewsNetwork.com. Yields are as high as 8.9%.

One example is Altria Group Inc. (MO), which is a Virginia based company that makes and markets cigarettes, cigars, and beer. It is the largest cigarette company by market cap in the US. The stock has a forward PE of 12.6, and pays a very generous yield of 5.6%. The company's brands include Marlboro, Virginia Slims, Parliament, Benson & Hedges, Basic, L&M, Copenhagen, Skoal, Red Seal, and Husky.

Lorillard, Inc. (LO) has a dividend payout rate of 5.0%. The stock, which markets the Newport, Kent, True, Maverick, Old Gold, and Max brands, trades at 12.9 times forward earnings. The company just boosted its dividend payout rate by an incredible 19%.

Reynolds American Inc. (RAI) makes and markets cigarettes and other tobacco products including the Camel, Kool, Pall Mall, Doral, Winston, Salem, Misty, Capri, Dunhill, and Natural American Spirit brands. The stock has a forward PE ratio of 12.8, and pays a nice yield of 5.5%.

For a free list of all the high yield tobacco stocks, which can be downloaded, sorted, and updated, go to WallStreetNewsNetwork.com. Also, if you haven't seen the Graphic Color Anti Smoking Pictures to Appear on Cigarette Packs, you should check them out.

What Does Warren Buffett have in Common with Vice?

There is a mutual fund called the Vice Fund (VICEX), which invests in what it calls 'vice' oriented company that are in the business of either aerospace and defense, gambling, tobacco and alcoholic beverages. According to the company's web site, the fund says that "these industries tend to thrive regardless of the economy as a whole. In fact, they may have the potential to perform better when times are uncertain, leading many to view investment in 'Vice' industries as a solid strategy during recessionary periods." As of the end of November, the fund was up an amazing 9.62% year-to-date, while the S&P 500 generated a slightly above break-even return of only 1.08% during the same period.

It is interesting to note that many of the stocks in the Vice Fund have high yields, partially due to what I call the 'bad company discount'. Since many institutions and individual investors avoid these types of stocks, the buying arena is smaller than other stocks, causing the discount in price compared to other income stocks. This is especially true with tobacco and cigarette stocks, such as Altria Group Inc. (MO) which yields 5.5%, Lorillard, Inc. (LO) yielding 4.5%, and Philip Morris International, Inc. (PM) at a 3.9% yield, all of which are owned by Vice.

The alcohol stocks have yields but not as high as tobacco. Brown-Forman Corporation (BF-B), producer of Jack Daniel's and Southern Comfort, provides investors with a yield of 1.7%. Anheuser-Busch InBev (BUD), maker of Budweiser, yields 1.6%.

So getting back to the big question, what is the 'vice' stock that Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-A) (BRK-B) owns? The stock is General Dynamics Corp. (GD), which makes combat vehicles, weapons systems, munitions, and military ships. The stock trades at nine times forward earnings, and yields 2.8%. The company generated a very slight profit increase of 0.30% for the latest quarter, on a 2% revenue increase.

To see free lists of these stocks, WallStreetNewsNetwork.com has lists of Beer Stocks, Wine and Liquor Stocks, and Warren Buffett Berkshire Hathaway Stocks, which can be downloaded, sorted, and updated.

Fire Safety Compliant Cigarettes: Top Tobacco Stocks

In the state of Minnesota, there is a requirement that cigarettes have to carry a Fire Safety Compliant label, which means that the cigarettes will go out after a short period of time if they are not being smoked. One investigation shows that this fire compliance doesn't necessarily work. Whether or not this type of compliance will spread across the United States is uncertain.

Certain investors, not just socially responsible investors, will avoid tobacco and cigarette stocks due to health concerns. However, many investors like the high yields of these stocks.

One example is Lorillard, Inc. (LO) which has a dividend payout of 4.4%. The stock, which markets the Newport, Kent, True, Maverick, Old Gold, and Max brands, trades at 14 times forward earnings. According to WallStreetNewsNetwork.com, there are over half a dozen tobacco stocks with yields in excess of 4%.

Another example is Vector Group Ltd. (VGR), a Florida based tobacco company that has many brands of cigarettes including Liggett, Grand Prix, Eve, Pyramid, USA and nicotine-free Quest. The stock has a price to earnings ratio of 19, and pays a yield of 9.1%.

Reynolds American Inc. (RAI) makes and markets cigarettes and other tobacco products including the Camel, Kool, Pall Mall, Doral, Winston, Salem, Misty, Capri, Dunhill, and Natural American Spirit brands. The stock has a forward PE ratio of 14, and pays a yield of 5.4%.

Altria Group Inc. (MO) is a Virginia based company that makes and markets cigarettes, cigars, and beer. It is the largest cigarette company by market cap in the US. The stock has a forward PE of 13, and pays a yield of 5.9%.
