According to the May 2014 issue of Inc. Magazine, the electronic cigarette business is a $2 billion business, a fast growing part of the trillion dollar cigarette industry. As an example of how the demand for e-cigarettes are growing, in the United Kingdom, the use of the e-cigs since 2010 has tripled.
The reason for the demand is due to the belief that the e-cigs may be safer than regular cigarettes and the fact that there is no second hand smoke.
Now with the legalization of marijuana gradually expanding through
the United States, a huge potential new market is on the horizon for
these devices.
For investors looking to puff on the electronic cigarette stocks, there are almost ten to choose from according to the free list at WallStreetNewsNetwork.com. The stocks seem to be divided in two categories, the large cap tobacco companies, and the small cap companies that specialize in the manufacturing and marketing e-cigarettes.
Vype is the brand name of the electronic cigarette produced by British American Tobacco (BTI), the second largest cigarette company in the world by revenues. The stock trades at 17 times earnings with a forward price to earnings ratio of 15. This company pays one of the highest yields of the major cigarette companies, with a distribution rate of 5.7%, paid semi-annually.
Lorillard (LO) has the blu eCigs brand in the U.S., and six months ago, the company bought the British electronic cigarette manufacturer, SKYCIG. The stock trades at 19 times trailing earnings and 16 times forward earnings. The stock yields 4.2%, payable quarterly.
In regards to the small cap companies, mCig (MCIG) has one of the largest market caps at $135 million. The company makes the Lifetech AirWell System. The company's latest reported quarterly revenues increased by over 580%.

Socially Irresponsible High Yield Stocks
Many investors and a few mutual funds will purposely avoid investing in certain companies that are in industries that are not considered socially responsible, such as Alcohol, Animal Testing, Weapons, Gambling, Tobacco, Oil, Coal, and Nuclear Energy. However, stocks in one of these industries, cigarettes and tobacco, the yields re quite high.
Cigarettes are still selling well, in spite of the cigarette pack warnings, in spite of the anti-smoking cigarette commercials, and in spite of the upcoming gross anti-smoking warnings that are expected to appear on cigarette packages.
I don't smoke and I don't ever remember investing in a tobacco company. But there are investors who are just primarily concerned about the financials of a company, as opposed to the company's products. There are actually ten publicly traded cigarette and tobacco companies, most of which pay decent dividends, that have been turned up by WallStreetNewsNetwork.com. Yields range from 3.5% to 9.3%.
One example is Lorillard, Inc. (LO) has a dividend payout rate of 4.5%. The stock, which markets the Newport, Kent, True, Maverick, Old Gold, and Max brands, trades at 14 times forward earnings.
Altria Group Inc. (MO), which is a Virginia based company that makes and markets cigarettes, cigars, and beer. It is the largest cigarette company by market cap in the US. The stock has a forward price to earning ratio of 13.5, and pays a very generous yield of 5.5%. The company's brands include Marlboro, Virginia Slims, Parliament, Benson & Hedges, Basic, L&M, Copenhagen, Skoal, Red Seal, and Husky.
Reynolds American Inc. (RAI) makes and markets cigarettes and other tobacco products including the Camel, Kool, Pall Mall, Doral, Winston, Salem, Misty, Capri, Dunhill, and Natural American Spirit brands. The stock has a forward PE ratio of 13.1, and pays a nice yield of 5.4%.

Gross Cigarette Warnings Delay May Help Tobacco Stocks
Remember those gross anti-smoking warnings that were supposed to appear on cigarette packages? Well the tobacco companies have won a temporary delay from a U.S. District Judge giving the court more time to review the FDA mandate.
Obviously, many investors wouldn't touch these stocks with a twenty foot cigarette holder. Other investors, who don't have concerns, like the 'bad company discount' which tends to give tobacco stocks a higher yield than stocks of other industries. There are ten publicly traded cigarette and tobacco companies, almost all of which pay dividends, that have been turned up by WallStreetNewsNetwork.com. Yields are as high as 8.9%.
One example is Altria Group Inc. (MO), which is a Virginia based company that makes and markets cigarettes, cigars, and beer. It is the largest cigarette company by market cap in the US. The stock has a forward PE of 12.6, and pays a very generous yield of 5.6%. The company's brands include Marlboro, Virginia Slims, Parliament, Benson & Hedges, Basic, L&M, Copenhagen, Skoal, Red Seal, and Husky.
Lorillard, Inc. (LO) has a dividend payout rate of 5.0%. The stock, which markets the Newport, Kent, True, Maverick, Old Gold, and Max brands, trades at 12.9 times forward earnings. The company just boosted its dividend payout rate by an incredible 19%.
Reynolds American Inc. (RAI) makes and markets cigarettes and other tobacco products including the Camel, Kool, Pall Mall, Doral, Winston, Salem, Misty, Capri, Dunhill, and Natural American Spirit brands. The stock has a forward PE ratio of 12.8, and pays a nice yield of 5.5%.

What Does Warren Buffett have in Common with Vice?
There is a mutual fund called the Vice Fund (VICEX), which invests in what it calls 'vice' oriented company that are in the business of either aerospace and defense, gambling, tobacco and alcoholic beverages. According to the company's web site, the fund says that "these industries tend to thrive regardless of the economy as a whole. In fact, they may have the potential to perform better when times are uncertain, leading many to view investment in 'Vice' industries as a solid strategy during recessionary periods." As of the end of November, the fund was up an amazing 9.62% year-to-date, while the S&P 500 generated a slightly above break-even return of only 1.08% during the same period.
It is interesting to note that many of the stocks in the Vice Fund have high yields, partially due to what I call the 'bad company discount'. Since many institutions and individual investors avoid these types of stocks, the buying arena is smaller than other stocks, causing the discount in price compared to other income stocks. This is especially true with tobacco and cigarette stocks, such as Altria Group Inc. (MO) which yields 5.5%, Lorillard, Inc. (LO) yielding 4.5%, and Philip Morris International, Inc. (PM) at a 3.9% yield, all of which are owned by Vice.
The alcohol stocks have yields but not as high as tobacco. Brown-Forman Corporation (BF-B), producer of Jack Daniel's and Southern Comfort, provides investors with a yield of 1.7%. Anheuser-Busch InBev (BUD), maker of Budweiser, yields 1.6%.
So getting back to the big question, what is the 'vice' stock that Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-A) (BRK-B) owns? The stock is General Dynamics Corp. (GD), which makes combat vehicles, weapons systems, munitions, and military ships. The stock trades at nine times forward earnings, and yields 2.8%. The company generated a very slight profit increase of 0.30% for the latest quarter, on a 2% revenue increase.
To see free lists of these stocks, WallStreetNewsNetwork.com has lists of Beer Stocks, Wine and Liquor Stocks, and Warren Buffett Berkshire Hathaway Stocks, which can be downloaded, sorted, and updated.

Fire Safety Compliant Cigarettes: Top Tobacco Stocks
In the state of Minnesota, there is a requirement that cigarettes have to carry a Fire Safety Compliant label, which means that the cigarettes will go out after a short period of time if they are not being smoked. One investigation shows that this fire compliance doesn't necessarily work. Whether or not this type of compliance will spread across the United States is uncertain.
Certain investors, not just socially responsible investors, will avoid tobacco and cigarette stocks due to health concerns. However, many investors like the high yields of these stocks.
One example is Lorillard, Inc. (LO) which has a dividend payout of 4.4%. The stock, which markets the Newport, Kent, True, Maverick, Old Gold, and Max brands, trades at 14 times forward earnings. According to WallStreetNewsNetwork.com, there are over half a dozen tobacco stocks with yields in excess of 4%.
Another example is Vector Group Ltd. (VGR), a Florida based tobacco company that has many brands of cigarettes including Liggett, Grand Prix, Eve, Pyramid, USA and nicotine-free Quest. The stock has a price to earnings ratio of 19, and pays a yield of 9.1%.
Reynolds American Inc. (RAI) makes and markets cigarettes and other tobacco products including the Camel, Kool, Pall Mall, Doral, Winston, Salem, Misty, Capri, Dunhill, and Natural American Spirit brands. The stock has a forward PE ratio of 14, and pays a yield of 5.4%.
Altria Group Inc. (MO) is a Virginia based company that makes and markets cigarettes, cigars, and beer. It is the largest cigarette company by market cap in the US. The stock has a forward PE of 13, and pays a yield of 5.9%.

Graphic Color Anti Smoking Pictures to Appear on Cigarette Packs: Future of Tobacco Stocks

On Friday, November 12, 2010, the Department of Health and Human Services announced in the Federal Register Volume 75, Number 218 the proposed rule called 'Required Warnings for Cigarette Packages and Advertisements.' As part of the proposal, the Federal government came out with a series of graphic, colorful picture warnings that would appear on the upper half of the top of the pack.
Many of these warnings are very disturbing, featuring such pictures as dead bodies, a man blowing cigarette smoke out of the hole in his throat, a mouth with lip cancer, etc. If you want to see a slide show of about a dozen of the proposed warnings, click HERE. Although the implementation isn't for a couple years out, it is bound to have some effect on future US sales.
Some tobacco companies offer incredibly high yields. Part of the reason for this is due to the stock trading at what I call the 'bad stock discount.' This discount comes about because many individual and institutional investors avoid the so-called sin stocks, also known as vice stocks. These companies can include such industries as gambling, alcohol, and adult businesses. But tobacco and cigarettes seem to be on top of the vice list. With fewer potential buyers of the stocks, the stocks trade lower that what other stocks would with similar financials and similar dividend payouts but non-vice businesses. The lower stock price causes the payout to reflect a higher yield. In addition, tobacco companies need to pay a higher payout in order to attract investors who would initially not look for a cigarette company stock.
Of the ten companies involved in tobacco in some way, eight of them pay dividends ranging from 2.7% to 8.4%. One of those stocks is Lorillard, Inc. (LO), a cigarette manufacturer with 41 brands including Newport, Kent, True, Maverick, and Old Gold. The company has been around since 1760; that's 250 years. The stock pays a yield of 5.1% and trades at 12 times forward earnings. The company's primary market is the United States, so it may be more affected by the upcoming warnings.
Philip Morris International, Inc. (PM) sports a forward price to earnings ratio of 14 and a yield of 4.3%. The company's brands include Marlboro, Merit, Parliament, Virginia Slims, L&M, Chesterfield, Next, and Philip Morris. The new US cigarette warnings shouldn't have any effect on the stock as its market is outside the US, including Canada, European Union, Russia and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and the South Pacific, and Latin America.

Universal Corp. (UVV) is a company that is not often mentioned in the financial press. The company, based in Richmond, Virginia, is a leaf tobacco merchant and processor which operates worldwide. The stock has a PE ratio of 8 and a yield of 4.3%. Its tobacco is used primarily for cigarettes, but also for cigars and smokeless tobacco products.

High Cash + No Debt + High Yield = Bargains
The cable and telecom company, Charter Communications Inc. (CHTR), just filed for bankruptcy, primarily due to their huge debt load. When you hear these stories, you realize how important it is to find stocks that are debt free if you are looking for more safer and secure companies to invest in. In addition, if the stock has a lot of cash, that adds to the level of safety. And if you can find stocks that meet both of these criteria, and the stock also pays a dividend, then maybe it is a stock worth buying.
WallStreetNewsNetwork.com recently uploaded its downloadable Excel database called High Cash No Debt High Yield Stock List. It lists over 30 companies that have a lot of cash, are debt free, and pay decent yields. Over a dozen have yields in excess of 4%.
