Use the Altman Z-Score to Check the Financial Quality of your Stocks

Edward Altman invented the Altman Z-Score in the 1960’s to determine the statistical probability of a company going bankrupt. The Creditguru.com has a nice interactive Z-score calculator that allows you to type in eight variables to determine the likelihood of failure. According to the site, a score under 1.80 means “Probability of Financial embarrassment is very high.”
I tried it for Valeant Pharmaceuticals (VRX) and came up with a score of -45.33 [That’s MINUS 45.33]. The text result says “Probability of Financial Embarrassment is very high in this case.”
In order for a company to rank safe based on the data entered, it needs a score above 3. A score of 2.70 to 2.99 means the company is on alert, and a score of 1.80 to 2.70 means that there is a good chance of the company going bankrupt within a couple years.

Weeding Out the Best Pot Stock: GW Pharmaceuticals

Headquartered in Salsbury, United Kingdom, GW Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:GWPH) uses its proprietary cannabinoid product platform to create and develop new therapeutics that can be used for a variety of treatments. The company's therapeutics, along with current and proposed treatments, include:
·      Sativex® for treating chronic cancer pain and multiple sclerosis spasticity
·      Epidiolix® for the treatment of childhood epilepsy, Dravet syndrome, and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome
·      Cannabidivarion for treating epilepsy
·      GWP42003 for treating ulcerative colitis and schizophrenia
·      GWP42004 for treating type-2 diabetes
·      GWP42002: GWP42003 for treating glioma, a tumor that starts in the brain or spine
One important development is that Sativex® was given Fast Track designation by the FDA for the treatment of chronic cancer pain in patients with advanced cancer who are not responding to opioid therapy. It is currently in a Phase 3 program for cancer pain with the FDA. Sativex® is already approved in 26 countries for spasticity caused by multiple sclerosis.

Strong Cash Position and Growing Revenues
In an industry where most companies don't even report revenues, GW has been generating revenues for years. For the latest reported quarter, revenues were up by 4.9%. Although the company has been generating losses, it has a huge cash cushion from its secondary offering in June of this year, netting the company $118 million, an increase of 342% in cash position over fiscal year end last year.

Revenue Growth
Revenue growth was primarily due to an increase in Sativex product sales generated by a rise in shipments to the company's commercial partners. In addition, total net revenues were helped by an increase in income from license, collaboration, and technical access fees.

Net loss went from GBP 2.028 million to GBP 6.928 million, due to a higher cost of sales from the higher volume of inventory shipped, an increase in research and development expenditures, and a rise in administrative expenditures caused by increased staffing expenditures and an unrealized loss on foreign exchange.

Inventories have remained constant over last year, at roughly GBP 4.7 million. In regards to guidance, the company expects strong double digit revenue growth for 2014.

Business Developments

Epidiolex®
FDA Authorized Physician-Led Access Program with about 100 children now receiving treatment in the United States at six hospital locations.

Orphan Drug Designation, Fast Track Designation were granted. An Investigational New Drug Application  has been opened with the FDA for the treatment of Dravet Syndrome. An additional Phase 3 trial is on track to begin in 2015.

Orphan Drug Designation was granted by the FDA for treating Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome. Phase 3 trials are on track to begin in 2015.

The company is collaborating with New York State and Georgia for Epidiolex clinical trials for epilepsy.

Sativex®
Phase 3 cancer pain data is expected to be released at the end of 2014, which would lead to an FDA New Drug Application.

Cannabidivarin
A Phase 2 trial for epilepsy should begin at the end of 2014 or the beginning of 2015.

Competitiion

Competition for this company could be looked at several ways. It could be examined as a biotech company, such as Biogen (NASDAQ:BIIB) and Questcor (NASDAQ:QCOR).

Or it could be looked at as a medical marijuana company, of which there are dozens. However, most of the other companies in this field are microcap stocks and penny stocks. The nearest competitors, based on large market cap, are Solvay SA (OTC:SVYZY), at a $13 billion market cap, which produces Marinol, a form of the primary marijuana ingredient tetrahydrocannabinol, commonly known as THC, and Valeant Pharmaceuticals Intl.            (NYSE:VRX), at a $42 billion market cap, which  distributes nabilone/Cesamet, a form of synthetic THC. Yet, in both of these cases, the THC drug is only a small part of their business.

If you are looking for other competitors, you can find a list of over 100 marijuana stocks at WallStreetNewsNetwork.com, along with information on the Stockerblog.com Marijuana Stock Index.

Timeliness
In the recent November election, Alaska, Oregon, and the District of Columbia have legalized the recreational use of marijuana. However, what is more important, and not many realize, is that 23 states have already legalized the use of medical marijuana.

Summary
GW Pharmaceuticals is a worldwide leader in the development of plant derived cannabinoid therapeutics.
GW is one of the few medical marijuana stocks with a market cap of over a billion dollars.
The company has been in business for 15 years and has produced the first marijuana related prescription drug, Sativex.®
It recently raised $118 million in a secondary offering.
Revenues for the latest reported quarter were up 4.9%.

Conclusion
GW has had a heck of a run this year, doubling in share price, so an investor obviously has market risk, and considering the speculative nature of the stock, if the stock market tanks, this stock could suffer much more than the average stock.
As is typical for many biotech companies, GW is not generating earnings yet. On the plus side, the company is increasing quarterly revenues on a year over year basis and has several therapeutic products in the pipeline. In addition, it is flush with cash.
So for investors that are willing to take the risk, and want to participate in the medical marijuana industry, you can't find a more solid pure play than GW Pharmaceuticals.

Marijuana Stock Index Up 390%: Jim Cramer and Marijuana

I have been a follower of the tweets of Jim Cramer on Twitter for quite a while and I noticed something interesting on Friday. I was surprised to see that he posted several links to articles on marijuana, including Cannabis Companies Get Series B Financing and Marijuana Job Fair Overwhelmed with Long Lines. Like it or not, the news on medical marijuana and legalized marijuana continues to grow (no pun intended).

Marijuana Stock Index Up 390% in Two Months

And no wonder. The Stockerblog.com Marijuana Stock Index, which can be found at WallStreetNewsNetwork.com, shows that marijuana stocks shot up by an incredible 390% for the first two months of the year, versus the S&P 500 which wasn't up even 1% over the same period of time.

The Stock that Rose 1108%

Some stocks dropped during the month of February, but were still up significantly from the beginning of the year.  For example, FusionPharm Inc.    (FSPM), dropped about a dollar a share from the end of January to the end of February. Yet, from the end of December, the stock went up by an amazing 1,108%. The is the company that makes and markets cultivation containers.

The Stock that Rose 416%

Yet, other marijuana stocks continued to make new highs (another unintended pun) through both months. CannaVEST    (CANV) went from 28.50 a share at year end to over 147 a share at the end of February, an increase of 416%. CannaVEST in involved in the production and marketing of hemp based nutriceuticals.

The Stock that Rose 1367%

The biggest high riser (pun was intended that time) during that two month period was Cannabis Sativa Inc.    (CBDS), which has a purchase agreement for a patent pending hybrid marijuana strain. The stock went from being a penny stock at 75 cents a share to 11 a share. This was an unbelievable increase of 1,367%.

Blue Chip Marijuana Stocks

Even the Blue Chip Marijuana Stocks outperformed the S&P 500, such as Psychmedics (PMD), Solvay (SVYZY), and  Valeant (VRX).

The Future and
Which Marijuana Stocks to Invest In

So will some of these marijuana stocks crash and burn? I'm sure a few will, but it is hard to tell which ones.  Will some continue to get higher? Definitely. So how do you pick the right ones?

My opinion is to use the Gold Rush Analogy. During the California gold rush, the businesses that made the most money were the ones that sold supplies and clothing (i.e. Levis) to the gold miners. I'm sure you can extend this analogy to marijuana companies, which you can find a list of at WallStreetnewsNetwork.com.

The Growth of the Medical Marijuana Industry and the Stocks that Participate

In November of 2012, the United States began the next revolution in American history. But this isn’t the railroad boom of the industrial revolution, or the booming importance of the Internet in the technology revolution. Instead, states like Colorado and Washington passed laws in 2012 that will pave the way for the medical marijuana revolution and will change how the nation accepts cannabis culture. But along with users who enjoy the opportunity to use marijuana for personal use, there is also a huge opportunity for investment for those that are looking to make a large financial gain.

Tax Revenues

Aside from all of the medical marijuana users who enjoy using for personal reasons, governments have also gotten ‘high’ after seeing the amount of money the industry turns over. In 2012, Colorado estimates that it brought in nearly $200 million in tax revenues. For a nation that is struggling to remain atop of the world economies, this is an eye-opening number. For those that are looking to invest, these numbers are important to keep in mind due to the value that they have on the national economy. If something is so profitable and helps the country dig into its national debt, it will only rise in value as it becomes more acceptable throughout the rest of the country. This garners amazing investment opportunities for those looking to invest in the marijuana industry.

Jobs

Aside from the money, the medical marijuana industry provides jobs for people. The larger the system gets, the more people are needed to work in the process of growing, harvesting, distributing and selling marijuana. If the tax revenue wasn’t enough to peak the interest of the government (hint, it is), then seeing the unemployment rate drop and even further bolstering the economy is another added benefit to keep in mind with the legitimacy of cultivating marijuana. This is an added safety net of concern for those looking to invest in the medical cannabis arena.

Establishment Support

Lastly, marijuana is no longer looked at with such negativity and stigmatized opinions. Influential names across America like US Attorney General Eric Holder, who has proposed more leniency for drug offenders, CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta support of medical marijuana legalization, and many more high-ranking officials have voiced their opinion on the financial and health benefits that medicinal marijuana provides. Even major health journals, such as Nutricula Magazine has espoused the legalization of marijuana for its health benefits.

Investment Opportunities

If you are an investor who is considering buying stocks in medical marijuana, consider that a lot is weighing in favor of the huge growth of the industry. Like anything, there is risk when investing. However with the financial, employment and health benefits that medicinal marijuana provides, the industry has already begun to catch enough momentum that it has captured the eyes of investors.
Most of the companies related to medical marijuana are very low cap stocks, according to the free list of over 20 marijuana stocks at WallStreetNewsNetwork.com. However, for the medical use of marijuana and its derivatives, there are larger companies that produce such products as Marinol, which is synthesized THC, also known as dronabinol, and available by prescription in the US. This is a product of Solvay SA (SVYSF). However this is just a small part of this large chemical conglomerate.
Nabilone, marketed as Cesamet, is produced by Valeant Pharmaceuticals International (VRX), which trades on the New York Stock Exchange. Nabilone, a synthetic cannabinoid, is used to treat chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, anorexia, and weight loss in AIDS patients. Valeant also markets Fluorouracil, a cancer treatment drug, and Diastat, a seizure drug. This $31.5 billion market cap stock trades at 7.87 times sales. Revenues for the latest quarter were up 33.6%, however, earnings were negative.

GW Pharmaceuticals (GWPRF) produces Sativex, an oral spray with tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol, which is used to treat multiple sclerosis patients, and also for treating pain in cancer patients. This $137 million company trades at three times sales. Revenues were down 34% for the latest quarter.

Some of the companies in this industry have already made major moves. For example, Medbox, Inc. (MDBX), which makes machines that can dispense medication and medical marijuana to individuals based on biometric identification, has risen from about $2 a share a year ago to $35 a share today. Other microcap medical marijuana-related stocks that have recently started to move up are Cannabis Science Inc. (CBIS), Medical Marijuana Inc. (MJNA) which prints its stock certificates on hemp paper, CannaVEST Corp. (CANV), and Cynapsus Therapeutics Inc. (CTH.V). These are extremely low capitalization stocks that should be considered extremely speculative.

Parkinson's Disease Bacteria Link Discovered: Companies Looking for a Cure

Researchers at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center have discovered a link between Parkinson's disease and the bacteria Helicobacter pylori, more commonly known as H. pylori. This is the same bacteria that can cause stomach ulcers. The study showed that middle aged mice infected with the virus showed symptoms similar to Parkinson's.

Parkinson's is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system and is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer's disease. Fortunately, there are many companies that produce treatment for Parkinson's and are researching cures. Many companies are looking at stem cells as a possible treatment.

One company involved in treatment of Parkinson's is Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (TEVA), an Israeli based company which was founded in 1901, that develops and manufactures a variety of pharmaceuticals. The company developed and markets AZILECT® [rasagiline tablets] as a treatment for Parkinson's disease. The stock trades at 13 time current earnings and 9 times forward earnings. The stock has been paying dividends quarterly and yields 1.6%.

Novartis AG (NVS), a very large Swiss pharmaceutical company, has developed Comtan® [entacapone], a medication for the treatment of Parkinson's Disease. The P/E is 14 and the forward P/E is 11. The yield is 3.3%.

Valeant Pharmaceuticals International (VRX) markets Zelapar® [selegiline HCl] Orally Disintegrating Tablets, a once-a-day adjunct therapy for Parkinson’s disease patients being treated with levodopa/carbidopa. The stock recently generated negativ earnings but yields 0.8%.

For companies involved in the stem cell aspect of treatments, check out the free list of stem cell stocks at WallStreetNewsNetwork.com. The list can be sorted and updated.

Marijuana Legalization Stocks

On Tuesday, November 2, California residents will be voting on Proposition 19, the ballot measure that, if passed, would legalize limited quantities of marijuana for recreational use. This has created plenty of fodder for news reports. The New York Times just reported on the marijuana related domain name land grab. UPI reported that a marijuana dispensary in San Francisco would give away free joints whenever the Giants hit a home run during the World Series. And to top it off, The Wall Street Journal posted an editorial by billionaire investor George Soros, in which he says he supports the legalization of marijuana.

Unfortunately, most of the plays on legalization involve very low cap stocks, according to the list of 20 marijuana stocks at WallStreetNewsNetwork.com. However, for the medical use of marijuana and its derivatives, there are larger companies that produce such products as Marinol, a trademark of Solvay SA (SVYSF.PK) and Nabilone, marketed as Cesamet by Valeant Pharmaceuticals International (VRX), which trades on the New York Stock Exchange. Nabilone, a synthetic cannabinoid, is used to treat chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, anorexia, and weight loss in AIDS patients.

Valeant also markets Fluorouracil, a cancer treatment drug, and Diastat, a seizure drug. This $4.38 billion market cap stock trades at 30 times earnings, and pays a yield of 1.4%. Earnings for the latest reported quarter were up 41% year over year on a 23% increase in revenues. The company will have its next earnings announcement on November 4.

Par Pharmaceutical Companies (PRX), a $1.14 billion market cap company markets Dronabinol, a form of Tetrahydrocannabinol or THC. However, this is a small part of the business as the company markets dozens of other drugs. The stock has a PE ratio of 13.9 and trades at one times sales. Earnings will be reported November 3.

GW Pharmaceuticals (GWPRF.PK) produces Sativex, an oral spray with tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol, which is used to treat multiple sclerosis patients, and also for treating pain in cancer patients. Earnings for the quarter ending March 31 were negative. The company will be reporting earnings on November 23.
