This is by far the best article I have ever read on getting off your duff and making the big step. You can either be the one who makes things happen, watches things happen, or says "what happened"?

If the winner is from the old American Football League, now the American Football Conference [AFC], New England Patriots, it indicaties an upcoming bear market. Brazil Financial Stocks

Brazil is considered one of the leading economies outside of Europe and the U.S. There are dozens of Brazilian stocks that trade on the New York Stock Exchange. Previously I had written about Brazil Chemical, Energy and Mining Stocks . One of the best ways to play this market is through the Brazilian financial stocks.

A diversified way to invest in Brazilian stocks, including the financials, is through the Brazil exchange traded fund, iShares MSCI Brazil Index (EWZ), which invests 95% of its assets in stocks traded primarily on the Bolsa de Valores de So Paulo. The fund pays a yield of 1.5% and was up approximately 75% last year.

Banco Bradesco (BBD), which provides banking and financial services and products to individuals, companies and international corporations around the world, is the largest insurance and pension provider in all of Brazil, based on insurance premiums, pensions plan contributions and income from saving plans. On January 26, 2008, Bradesco was in talks to acquire a majority stake in Agora, which is the largest brokerage firm in Brazil.
Due to the Brazilian economy, Bradesco was featured on Cramer’s Mad Money financial show on October 30, 2007, with the stock being referenced as the best way to play the booming Brazilian economy. Reasons included few bad loans, a market leader in insurance and pension plans, and 20% of the ATMs in a wealthy country.
The stock has a P/E of 17, a PEG of 1.0, and pays a small yield of 0.3%.

Banco Itau Holding Financeria (ITU) is a bank headquartered out of Sao Paulo, which accounts for 11% of all retail banking services in Brazil, making it the second largest bank in Brazil. The company also owns Investimentos Itau. Currently, the company has 50,000 employees. Banco Itau provides a wide variety services including small business banking, credit cards, retail banking, asset management, and brokerage products. They have about 13 million customers.
On January 22, the company was reported to have had its M&A business grow by $7.5 billion, or 12.6% from 2006. This made it among the top ten financial advisers in Latin America, sitting at eighth, above even Merrill Lynch.
In early 2008, Banco announced it would be selling a 15% stake in the Brazilian credit card company Redecard through a share offering. In total, the purchase of the 15 percent would amount to nearly $1.4 billion.
The stock has a P/E of 13, a PEG of 0.85, and a yield of 1.5%.

Wall Street Definition: Dead Cat Bounce

A Dead Cat Bounce is when a stock has a slight rise after a sharp drop. This is generally in reference to a bad stock ("dead cat"). This term also occasionally applies to the stock market in general.

Speaking of dead cat bounces, I just started reading a book called The Dead Cat Bounce: A Home Repair is Homicide Mystery, by Sarah Graves. This mystery is about a woman who is a former Wall Street trader who quits and moves to Maine, buys a fixer-upper old mansion, only to discover a dead body in one of the rooms. The book is written somewhat in the style of Agatha Christie and provides captivating prose. I am only on Chapter 4 four but I'm looking forward to the rest of the book. By the way, there are nine different books (that's right 9 books) called The Dead Cat Bounce, so if you are interested in the book, make sure you get the one by Sarah Graves. It came out about ten years ago.

Museum of American Finance Re-Opens at their New Location

If you live in or travel to the New York area, you need to stop in an see the Museum of American Finance, which just re-opened at their new 48 Wall Street location. Their 30,000 square feet of space contains numerous artifacts relating to the history of the stock market and commodities market, such as early stock tickers, ticker tapes from the 1929 crash, the oldest known photograph of Wall Street, and a U.S. Treasury Bond issued to George Washington. Don't forget to check out the stocks certificates signed by Harry Houdini, Walt Disney, and Sir Isaac Newton. I just attended the museum and was impressed, especially since it is the only investment related museum that I am aware of in the U.S.

Retail Stocks Follow-up

When I wrote the article on retailer stocks on Monday, during the Martin Luther King holiday, I really did think that they would be good contrarian plays but even I was surprised about how well retailers performed during the last couple days. Stocks such as American Eagle Outfitters Inc. (AEO) [up almost 4% Wednesday], J. C. Penney Company, Inc (JCP) [up over 2.5% Wednesday], Limited Brands Inc. (LTD) [up 7% Wednesday, and Saks Inc. (SKS) [up almost 5% Wednesday], were up substantially two days in a row.

Now I am looking for the next contrarian play.

[Authors note: I've used them in the past and was very happy with their services.] 100,000 filmmakers in over 200 countries utilize their service.

Stockerblog Interviewed on Brazilian TV

Last year, I was interviewed a couple times on CNBC and even appeared live on Rupert Murdock's new Fox Business Channel on the second day it it started broadcasting.

I have now gone international. I was recently interviewed on a financial news segment of Globo News on the Globo TV network in Brazil, to discuss the Gisele Bündchen Stock Index and other celebrity stock indexes. I appeared on the first eight minutes of the segment and the show was extremely well received by Brazilian viewers.

Analysis of a Baby Boomer Stock

I rarely write in-depth analyses of individual stocks. The last one I did was the article called Why AT&T Stock Could Be Up Substantially by Year End. At the time back on July 24, AT&T was selling for 39.68 and closed at the end of the year at 41.56, an increase of 4.7%, not counting the dividend payment of 35.5 cents per share.

The stock I am covering today is Cynosure, Inc. (CYNO), a manufacturer and seller of aesthetic treatment systems which appeal to the baby boomers. Some of their products include Triactive for cellulite reduction, SmartLipo for laser body sculpting, Cynergy for vascular lesions and pigmentation, Affirm for wrinkle reduction anti-aging, and Elite for hair removal.

The company has customers in over 60 countries and holds 37 patents in the United States. In November, the company reported its third quarter financials. Revenues increased by an amazing 70% to an all time record of $31.5 Million. Their net income was $4.4 million for the quarter versus a net loss of $4.2 million in 2006. International expansion is now a major goal of the company. They are also expanding their marketing and sales support programs along with more distributor partnerships.

With a recent stock price of about 25, the stock caries a forward price to earnings ratio of 14, and a price earnings to growth ratio of 0.63. Last month, Citi Investment Research upgraded the company from a Hold to a Buy. Unless there is a serious recession, this company should continue to do well for several years. Although this is not a recommendation [I never make recommendations], I strongly suggest further research into this company.

Stocks More Popular thanSex in China

The terms 'stocks', 'China Merchants Bank' (CIHHF.PK), 'Industrial and Commercial Bank of China' (IDCBF.PK) and 'China Construction Bank' (CICHF.PK) all outperformed the term 'sex' for words that were searched for on Google (GOOG) last year in China. In addition, two of the most searched questions were 'what is a blue chip' and 'how to invest in the stock market'.

Is this the sign of a 'hot' market or what?

Stockerblog's Review of 2007 Predictions

Back on Sunday, August 12, 2007, I described a series of predictions for the balance of the year. Here are my predictions and the results:

1. The residential real estate market will get far worse.
That was a slam dunk prediction.

2. Politicians will probably pass laws to severely limit the number of sub-prime mortgages in the future.
I was wrong about this one; the mortgage companies themselves did this on their own.

3. The real estate market is far from the bottom.
That was true.

4. The Federal Reserve Board will eventually lower rates but it will do almost nothing to help the real estate or mortgage market.
They did lower rates, real estate has continued to drop, mortgage defaults have continued to get worse.

5. A few major hedge funds will go under, and at least one major investment firm will experience severe problems.
Several hedge funds have closed their doors, and many investment firms have had major problems.

6. More mortgage companies will declare bankruptcy and at least one major homebuilder will go under.
Since August 10, there have been 93 lenders that have imploded. In regards to homebuilders, Levitt Corporation's (LEV) homebuilding division filed for bankruptcy, along with several smaller homebuilders.

7. The stocks of investment brokers and investment banks will stagnate.
Well that was an understatement.

8. The bank stocks will also languish.
Another understated prediction.

9. Any stocks which have nothing to do with mortgages or real estate with be significantly higher by year end.
There were plenty of those stocks; look at GameStop Corp. (GME), Fluor Corporation (FLR), Research In Motion Ltd. (RIMM), and Amazon (AMZN).

10. Seven stocks which should be much higher by year end.
Finally, the most important section. I gave a list of seven stocks that I predicted would be higher by the end of 2007. Every stocks was up, and the average increase of all the stocks was 10.5% (26.9% on an annualized basis, far outperforming the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which was basically flat, up only 0.2%. The S&P 500 was only up 1%. By the way, the 10.5% gain does not include dividends; if you add those in, it bumps the return up to 11.7%.

The worst performing stock on my list is Kimberly-Clark (KMB), the health and hygiene products company, which was up only 1.7% (or 3.2% if you include dividends). The top performing stock on my list is UIL Holdings (UIL), the Connecticut based utility, which increased by 20.0% (or 23.2% with dividends). The following is a list of the stocks and their returns:

Company ........... 8/10/07 ..... 12/31/07 ..... Gain
Lafarge (LFRGY.PK) .... 39.19 ..... 45.35 ....... 15.7%
URS Corp. (URS) ....... 50.24 ..... 54.33 ........ 8.1%
Pepsico (PEP) ......... 67.95 ..... 75.9 ........ 11.7%
Kimberly-Clark (KMB) .. 68.21 ..... 69.34 ........ 1.7%
Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) 61.15 ..... 66.7 ......... 9.1%
UIL Holdings (UIL) .... 30.78 ..... 36.95 ....... 20.0%
Anheuser-Busch (BUD) .. 48.73 ..... 52.34 ........ 7.4%

Average return 10.5%
Average return annualized 26.9%

Dow Jones Industrial Average 0.2%
S & P 500 1.0%
