Stocks Going Ex Dividend the Third Week of June

Here is our latest update on the stock trading technique called ‘Buying Dividends,’ also commonly referred to as ‘Dividend Capture.’ This is the process of buying stocks before the ex dividend date and selling the stock shortly after the ex date at about the same price, yet still being entitled to the dividend. This technique generally works only in bull markets, and can work in flat or choppy markets, but you need to avoid the technique during bear markets.
In order to be entitled to the dividend, you have to buy the stock before the ex-dividend date, and you can’t sell the stock until after the ex date. The actual dividend may not be paid for another few weeks.
WallStreetNewsNetwork.com has compiled a downloadable and sortable list of the stocks going ex dividend in the near future. The list contains many dividend paying companies, lots with market caps over $500 million, and yields over 2%. Here are a few examples showing the stock symbol, the ex-dividend date, the quarterly dividend amount, and annual yield.

Ameren Corporation (AEE) 6/12/2017 0.44 3.04%
Anadarko Petroleum (APC) 6/12/2017 0.05 0.40%

Non-Alcoholic Beverage Stocks for the Summer

Many people are non-drinkers of alcoholic beverages. So what do they drink instead of beer and wine, besides water? Soft drinks, soda, pop, and soda pop. Whatever you call it in your part of the country, large numbers of consumers are still drinking a huge amount of soft drinks, especially now that summer is here with picnic season. This, in spite of the criticism that the manufacturers are taking because of the sugary content of these drinks. Even the tax attack threat of sugar drinks.

Coka Cola (KO) is transitioning towards more healthier beverages along with the other major soft drink  producers. The company just reported a year-over-year 7.5% earnings reduction, on a 4.2% drop in revenues. The stock sports a 22 price to earnings ratio, and trades at 19 times forward earnings. Coke pays a 3% yield.

The biggest competitor of Coca Cola is Pepsico (PEP), which trades at 20 times trailing earnings and 18 times forward earnings. Revenues for the latest quarter flat, however  earnings spiked 13.1%. This company also pays a yield of 3%.

Dr. Pepper Snapple Group (DPS) is another big player in the Beverage pool. It trades at 18 times trailing earnings and 16 times forward earnings. Earnings for the quarter were up an incredible 46.2%.  It pays a yield of 2.8%

According to the list at WallStreetNewsNetwork.com, there are over a dozen beverage stocks to choose from. Several of these stocks pay dividends.

The Tax Attack on Soft Drink Companies: What About the Stocks?

If you have been watching the news about the soft drink industry recently, you would notice what I call the Tax Attack on soft drinks with lots of sugar. Will sugary soda become the next tobacco? San Francisco is now considering cutting down on the consumption of these drinks through a proposed soda tax following in the footsteps of other cities. Even Mexico is proposing to tax soft drinks with sugar along with junk food.

Just in the last six months, Coca Cola has dropped by about 6%, versus the S&P 500 which is up over 10% during the same period. What's a contrarian to do? By the way, have you heard about the new Coca Cola is part of a Healthy Lifestyle ad? (You probably won't see it in the United States.)

Obviously, Coke is moving towards more healthier drinks along with the other major beverage producers. The company just reported a year-over-year 5.9% earnings growth, on a 2.5% drop in revenues. The stock sports a 20.5 price to earnings ratio, and trades at 17.9 times forward earnings. The company provides its shareholders with a 2.8% yield.

Coke's biggest competitor is Pepsico (PEP), which trades at 20 times trailing earnings and 18 times forward earnings. Earnings that were recently reported were almost flat on the positive side, with revenues up slightly at 1.5%. The yield on the stock is 2.7%.

According to the list at WallStreetNewsNetwork.com, there are over a dozen beverage stocks to choose from, including Dr Pepper Snapple Group, Inc. (DPS) with a PE of 15.4, a forward PE of 14.5,  and yielding 3.3%. There is also SodaStream International Ltd. (SODA), which is a different type of competitor. The stock trades at 18.6 times forward earnings.

Will the Soft Drink Ban in New York City Affect Beverage Companies?

Soft drinks, soda, soda pop, pop. No matter what you call it, and depending on what part of the country you live in you may call it something different, it all refers to the sugary flavored beverages that are popular around the world. Now the City of New York wants to control your consumption of these beverages.

The vote was 8 to 0 by the New York Board of Health, with one member abstaining, to ban the serving of soda beverages in cups greater than 16 ounces. Surprisingly, the member who abstained did so because he didn't think the ban was strong enough. The idea behind this ban, which goes into effect in March, was to reduce obesity.

Sometimes when governments ban something, it has the reverse effect and may actually increase consumption. Some soda companies experienced a stock price drop when the news came out even though the stock market was up, but maybe this has created a buying opportunity. Look at marijuana today and alcohol during the Depression. There are almost twenty stocks in the beverage soft drink industry, with half a dozen companies paying dividends in excess of 1%, according to WallStreetNewsNetwork.com.

One of the highest yielding beverage companies is Dr Pepper Snapple Group, Inc. (DPS), which yields 3.0%. It trades at 15.8 times trailing earnings, and 13.7 times forward earnings. The company's products include Dr Pepper, Crush, Canada Dry, Sunkist soda, Schweppes, 7UP, A&W, RC Cola, Squirt, Sun Drop, Diet Rite, Welch's, and Country Time. Earnings for the latest quarter were up 3.5% on a 2.5% boost in revenues.

Of course, there is Coca Cola (KO), which has one of the most popular brands in the world. The stock trades at 20.2 times earnings, with a forward price to earnings ratio of 17.5. Earnings were flat for the latest quarter. The company, whih markets such products as Diet Coke, Fanta, Sprite, Coca-Cola Zero, vitaminwater, Powerade, and Minute Maid, pays a yield of 2.7%.

For consumers who like to create their own beverages, SodaStream International Ltd. (SODA) can provide that option. The stock has a P/E ratio of 24.9, and 14.4 times forward earnings. It does not pay a dividend.

Can you guess which beverage stock pays a 3.1% yield? Check out the free list of beverage soft drink stocks at WallStreetNewsNetwork.com.

Prevent Skin Cancer with Caffeine: Coke or Pepsi Anyone?

Just in time for summer! According to a recent study in the Journal of the American Association for Cancer Research, the risk of getting basal cell carcinoma, a common form of skin cancer, can be reduced by drinking caffeinated drinks. This doesn't just mean coffee, it also includes tea and soft drinks such a Coca Cola (KO) and Pepsi (PEP). It even includes chocolate! You only need a couple caffeine servings per day.

This study involved research on 112,897 people. The highlights of the study showed, first, that coffee drinking and basal cell carcinoma risk are inversely associated, which means that the higher the coffee consumption, the lower the risk. Second, the most likely component of coffee that causes this effect is the caffeine. Those who avoid caffeine by drinking decaf should be aware that the study showed that the consumption of decaffeinated coffee showed no reduction in skin cancer, which seems to indicate that caffeine can block skin tumor formation. It isn't just skin cancer risk that caffeine can help prevent. Caffeine has also been  shown to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and Parkinson’s disease. According to Jiali Han, Ph.D., associate professor at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School in Boston and Harvard School of Public Health, "our results add basal cell carcinoma to a list of conditions for which risk is decreased with increasing coffee consumption."

So how can an investor participate in the consumption of coffee? There are several ways, according to the free list of coffee stocks at WallStreetNewsNetwork.com. First, there are the coffee houses, Starbucks (SBUX) and Peets (PEET). Starbucks is the largest coffeehouse retailer in the world, with outlets in 50 countries and over 17,000 shops worldwide. The stock trades at 23 times forward earnings and pays a yield of 1.3%. Earnings for the latest quarter were up 18.5% on an 14.7% increase in revenues.

Peet's Coffee and Tea is a specialty coffee roaster, marketer, and retailer founded in 1966 in Berkeley, California. The stock trades at 25 times forward earnings. Revenues for the latest quarter were up 7.1%, but earnings dropped by about 38.6%. The company does not pay a dividend.

A major wholesaler of coffee is Coffee Holding Co. (JVA), which also markets private label coffee and branded coffee in the US and Canada. The company has 90 varieties of raw green coffee beans which it imports from around the world and sold to large and small operators.

Another source of caffeine is tea. Teavana Holdings (TEA), which trades on the New York Stock Exchange, operates as a specialty retailer of loose-leaf teas, tea wares, and other tea-related merchandise in North America. The stock has a forward price to earnings ratio of 19, with earning rising 5.4% for the latest quarter on a 26.8% boost in earnings.

But it is not just coffee and tea where you can get your caffeine fix, there are also the soft drinks, also known as soda and pop depending on what part of the country you live in.  Coca Cola distributes numerous types of soft drinks in over 200 countries, and is most known for its Coke product. Coca Cola Classic contains 100.05 milligrams of caffeine per liter. The company sells many other caffeinated drinks such as Nestea and the energy drink Full Throttle. The stock trades at 18 times forward earnings, and will be having their earnings announcement on July 17. The stock is set to have a 2 for 1 stock split on August 12. The stock pays a dividend rate of 2.6%.

PepsiCo, a large food and beverage conglomerate, is probably Coke's biggest competitor. The company's leading caffeinated soft drink, Pepsi, has 104 milligrams per liter of caffeine. It also sells Mountain Dew with 154 mg/L and Mountain Dew MDX which has a supercharged 198.6 mg/L. It even markets Adrenaline Rush. The stock has a forward P/E ratio of 16 and a yield of 3.0%. Earnings will be announced July 25.

Dr Pepper Snapple Group (DPS) produces Dr Pepper, which contains 187 mg/L. The stock has a forward P/E of 14 and pays a decent yield of 3.1%.

Most of the energy drinks are made by private companies; however, Monster, is made by Monster Beverage Corporation (MNST), which trades on NASDAQ. Monster contains over 316 mg/L. The stock trades at 30 times earnings.

Don't forget chocolate. The Hershey Company (HSY) has its Special Dark Chocolate Bar with 31 milligrams of caffeine per serving and its Special Milk Chocolate Bar with 10 milligrams of caffeine. Hershey trades at 21 times forward earnings and yields 2.1%.

Buy Super Bowl Stocks According to Rice University

Rice University in Texas just came out with a study that the publicly traded companies that advertise on the Super Bowl this Sunday, such as Anheuser-Busch InBev (BUD) and Dr Pepper Snapple Group (DPS), should show an increase in price due to in increase in purchases of the stocks. WallStreetNewsNetwork.com has a free database of the major advertisers on the Super Bowl, which can be sorted and changed.

Check out the new release from Rice University below:

Watch the Super Bowl and buy some stocks?
Rice professors say publicly traded companies can expect increase in stock sales after big ad buys

HOUSTON – (Feb. 4, 2010) – It is commonly known that companies spend millions of dollars on advertising to increase general awareness, introduce new product lines, build on their brands and sell products and services, but professors at Rice University's Jones Graduate School of Business say such high-profile advertising provides another result that is not so well-known: Publicly traded companies who invest in big ad buys like the Super Bowl see a spike in their common stock being traded, even if they're not advertising a consumer product.

"We're fairly certain that the publicly traded companies advertising on Sunday's Super Bowl will see a spike in stock purchases," said James Weston, an associate professor of management and co-author of the study "Advertising, Breadth of Ownership and Liquidity."

Weston, along with Rice colleagues Gustavo Grullon and George Kanatas, said the increase in common-stock trading will come from the "everyday" person and not serious investors.

"People buy on impulse and on recognition," Weston said. "With more and more online trading taking place, companies that spend money on big advertising campaigns see this additional benefit from their advertising investment."

To speak to Weston, Grullon or Kanatas, or to obtain a copy of the study, contact David Ruth at 713-348-6327 or druth@rice.edu.
