Would You Pay $80 for a Cup of Coffee Made with Cat Poop?

Have you ever had a cup of Kopi Luwak coffee? You would probably remember if you did, as it would have cost you as much as $80 for a cup. If you have never heard of Kopi Luwak, let me enlighten you. It is coffee that is made with part-digested coffee cherries which have been eaten and defecated by the Asian palm civet. A civet is an animal that is also called toddy cat. Supposedly, the digestion makes the coffee taste better.

I'm not sure if any of the major coffee chains sell Kopi Luwak, but you can buy a box of 48 ten gram sachets of Kopi Luwak Specialty Arabica House Blend Ground Gourmet Coffee for only $1,090.

There are seventeen stocks in the caffeine industry, according to the free list of coffee stocks at WallStreetNewsNetwork.com. Five of them pay dividends.

Starbucks (SBUX) is the largest coffee retailer in the world, which has in excess of 21,000 shops worldwide in 65 countries. The stock trades at 35 times trailing earnings and 26 times forward earnings. Earnings dropped by 30% for the latest quarter on a revenue increase of 12% year-over-year. The stock pays a yield of 1.4%.

Coffee Holding Co. (JVA) is one of the largest wholesalers of coffee. It has almost 100 varieties of raw green coffee beans which it purchases worldwide. It resells to both small and large coffee roasters. Apparently, the huge drop in the price of coffee beans has affected this company as earnings tanked 73% on a revenue drop of 24%.

Keurig Green Mountain (GMCR), which is based in Waterbury, Vermont, trades at 30 times trailing earnings and 25 times forward earnings. Earnings for the latest reported quarter dropped 22.4% on a 9% reduction in revenues. The stock sports a yield of 1.4%.

Prevent Skin Cancer with Caffeine: Coke or Pepsi Anyone?

Just in time for summer! According to a recent study in the Journal of the American Association for Cancer Research, the risk of getting basal cell carcinoma, a common form of skin cancer, can be reduced by drinking caffeinated drinks. This doesn't just mean coffee, it also includes tea and soft drinks such a Coca Cola (KO) and Pepsi (PEP). It even includes chocolate! You only need a couple caffeine servings per day.

This study involved research on 112,897 people. The highlights of the study showed, first, that coffee drinking and basal cell carcinoma risk are inversely associated, which means that the higher the coffee consumption, the lower the risk. Second, the most likely component of coffee that causes this effect is the caffeine. Those who avoid caffeine by drinking decaf should be aware that the study showed that the consumption of decaffeinated coffee showed no reduction in skin cancer, which seems to indicate that caffeine can block skin tumor formation. It isn't just skin cancer risk that caffeine can help prevent. Caffeine has also been  shown to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and Parkinson’s disease. According to Jiali Han, Ph.D., associate professor at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School in Boston and Harvard School of Public Health, "our results add basal cell carcinoma to a list of conditions for which risk is decreased with increasing coffee consumption."

So how can an investor participate in the consumption of coffee? There are several ways, according to the free list of coffee stocks at WallStreetNewsNetwork.com. First, there are the coffee houses, Starbucks (SBUX) and Peets (PEET). Starbucks is the largest coffeehouse retailer in the world, with outlets in 50 countries and over 17,000 shops worldwide. The stock trades at 23 times forward earnings and pays a yield of 1.3%. Earnings for the latest quarter were up 18.5% on an 14.7% increase in revenues.

Peet's Coffee and Tea is a specialty coffee roaster, marketer, and retailer founded in 1966 in Berkeley, California. The stock trades at 25 times forward earnings. Revenues for the latest quarter were up 7.1%, but earnings dropped by about 38.6%. The company does not pay a dividend.

A major wholesaler of coffee is Coffee Holding Co. (JVA), which also markets private label coffee and branded coffee in the US and Canada. The company has 90 varieties of raw green coffee beans which it imports from around the world and sold to large and small operators.

Another source of caffeine is tea. Teavana Holdings (TEA), which trades on the New York Stock Exchange, operates as a specialty retailer of loose-leaf teas, tea wares, and other tea-related merchandise in North America. The stock has a forward price to earnings ratio of 19, with earning rising 5.4% for the latest quarter on a 26.8% boost in earnings.

But it is not just coffee and tea where you can get your caffeine fix, there are also the soft drinks, also known as soda and pop depending on what part of the country you live in.  Coca Cola distributes numerous types of soft drinks in over 200 countries, and is most known for its Coke product. Coca Cola Classic contains 100.05 milligrams of caffeine per liter. The company sells many other caffeinated drinks such as Nestea and the energy drink Full Throttle. The stock trades at 18 times forward earnings, and will be having their earnings announcement on July 17. The stock is set to have a 2 for 1 stock split on August 12. The stock pays a dividend rate of 2.6%.

PepsiCo, a large food and beverage conglomerate, is probably Coke's biggest competitor. The company's leading caffeinated soft drink, Pepsi, has 104 milligrams per liter of caffeine. It also sells Mountain Dew with 154 mg/L and Mountain Dew MDX which has a supercharged 198.6 mg/L. It even markets Adrenaline Rush. The stock has a forward P/E ratio of 16 and a yield of 3.0%. Earnings will be announced July 25.

Dr Pepper Snapple Group (DPS) produces Dr Pepper, which contains 187 mg/L. The stock has a forward P/E of 14 and pays a decent yield of 3.1%.

Most of the energy drinks are made by private companies; however, Monster, is made by Monster Beverage Corporation (MNST), which trades on NASDAQ. Monster contains over 316 mg/L. The stock trades at 30 times earnings.

Don't forget chocolate. The Hershey Company (HSY) has its Special Dark Chocolate Bar with 31 milligrams of caffeine per serving and its Special Milk Chocolate Bar with 10 milligrams of caffeine. Hershey trades at 21 times forward earnings and yields 2.1%.

Coffee Beans Help With Weight Loss: More News You've Been Waiting For

Here is some great news for coffee drinkers interested in losing weight. According to a recent study presented at the American Chemical Society's meeting in San Diego, participants in the study who took unroasted, green coffee bean extract lost in excess of 10% of their body weight on average, in less than six month. Please note: that's not ten pounds, that's ten percent. So for someone weighing 150 pounds, that's a 15 pound loss. For someone who weighs 250 pounds, it is a 25 pound loss.

The study analyzed 16 overweight adults between the ages of 22 to 46 years of age. The average weight loss was 17 pounds with a 16 percent decrease in body fat, with no side effects. Researchers at the University of Scranton believe that it may be due to the chlorogenic acid in the unroasted coffee bean. Unfortunately, roasted coffee has much less of this ingredient than unroasted coffee.

From an investor standpoint, there are many coffee companies available as investments. WallStreetNewsNetwork.com has recently updated its list of publicly traded companies in the coffee business, several of which pay dividends.

Some victims lost close to $200,000 each. Several investors never even received their coffee vending machines. The head of the swindle was sentenced to 10 years in jail plus $1.1 million in restitution.

Fortunately, there is an easier, safer, and better way to invest in coffee. The better option is through investing in stocks of companies involved in the coffee business. The stock trades at 16 times current earnings, 10 times forward earnings and provides a dividend yield that can outperform your money market yield, at 1.3%. Revenues rose 88% for the latest reported quarter, but earnings dropped 60%.

Why buy a coffee shop franchise when you can much more easily buy a part of the largest coffeehouse retailer in the world? Starbucks (SBUX) has outlets in 50 countries and over 17,000 shops worldwide. The stock trades at 27 times earnings and enjoys a yield of 1.6%. Coffee at Six Month Low: Coffee Stocks Profit Margins Up?

According to a recent article at TheStreet.com, the price of coffee has tanked to a six month low, primarily due to a glut from good weather conditions in Brazil, exports from Latin America increasing, and greater production in India and Japan. Since it is unlikely that baristas will start passing on cost savings to their customers, profit margins for coffee vendors should increase.

There are more than ten publicly traded companies in the coffee business, based on the list of coffee stocks at WallStreetNewsNetwork.com. Half a dozen pay dividends with yields in excess of 1.2%.

Starbucks (SBUX) is the largest coffeehouse retailer in the world, with outlets in 50 countries and over 17,000 shops worldwide. The stock trades at 22.3 times forward earnings and pays a yield of 1.3%. Earnings for the latest quarter were up 20.4% on an 9.9% increase in revenues.

Another example is Coffee Holding Co. (JVA), a roaster of wholesale coffee which markets wholesale green coffee, private label coffee, and branded coffee in the United States and Canada. The stock trades at 23.5 times forward earnings and has a small dividend yield of 0.6%. Earnings for the latest reported quarter were up 48% on an 87% increase in revenues.

The J. M. Smucker Co. (SJM) sells the Folgers brand of coffee and has a forward price to earnings ratio of 14 and a generous yield of 2.4%.

Stocks of the Most Widely Consumed Psychoactive Substance in the World

Can you guess what 'the most widely consumed psychoactive substance in the world' is? It's not marijuana or cocaine. It's not alcohol (is alcohol psychoactive?). It is coffee. According to an article in the Public Library of Science Genetics Journal, there is statistical evidence that the consumption of caffeine may be an inherited trait based on genetics, not just due to demographic and social factors. (Thanks to Casey Research for fining this study.) Coffee drinkers are consuming about seven million metric tons of coffee every year. With this much demand, investors should take a look at the companies involved in the coffee industry, of which there are about ten, according to the list at WallStreetNewsNetwork.com.

Starbucks (SBUX) is the largest coffeehouse company in the world, operating in 50 countries with over 17,009 stores worldwide. The stock trades at 20 times forward earnings and pays a yield of 1.5%. Earnings for the latest quarter were up 43.5% on an 8% increase in revenues.

Caribou Coffee Company, Inc. (CBOU) is another, albeit smaller, coffeehouse operator which trades at 20.3 times forward earnings. This Minnesota based company has over 500 coffeehouses. Earnings for the latest quarter were up 45.9% on a 1.8% increase in revenues.

Coffee Holding Co. (JVA) is a roaster of wholesale coffee which markets wholesale green coffee, private label coffee, and branded coffee in the United States and Canada. The stock trades at 10.1 times forward earnings and has a favorable yield of 2.3%.

The iPath DJ-UBS Coffee TR Sub-Index ETN (JO) is an exchange traded fund which has a goal of tracking the Dow Jones-UBS Coffee Total Return Sub-Index. It has had a one year total return of 85.5% and a year-to-date return of 10.5%.

Hot Coffee Stocks

News has been buzzing in the financial press recently about the possible takeover of Peet's Coffee (PEET) by Starbucks (SBUX). This is on the heels of the news about the partnership of Starbucks with Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR).

Some investors consider McDonald's Corporation (MCD) to be a coffee retailer. However, for retailers with a primary product of coffee, Starbucks is the largest, with a market cap of over $26 billion. The stock trades at 26 times current earnings and 20 times forward earnings. It also pays a yield of 1.5%.

Another way to play America's (and the world's) demand for coffee is to invest in the wholesale coffee roasters. Coffee Holding Co., Inc. (JVA) is a roaster of wholesale coffee which markets wholesale green coffee, private label coffee, and branded coffee in the United States and Canada. The stock trades at 13.5 times earnings and has a forward price to earnings ratio of 11. The yield is a generous 2.7%.

If you believe the price of coffee is going to rise, you can always invest in the iPath DJ-UBS Coffee TR Sub-Index ETN (JO), which attempts to track the Dow Jones-UBS Coffee Total Return Sub-Index.
