Long Term Healthcare for Your Portfolio


According to the Census Bureau, the number of Americans over the age of 65 increased by 8.3% over the last six years, and based on their projections, there will be 19,570,000 more Americans over 65 in the next 13 years. One of the consequences of the aging population is the increasing need for long term care. Here are some stocks which are primarily involved in the long term health care industry worth an examination. All have market caps over $300 million.

Sun Healthcare Group, Inc. (SUNH) is a California based company is a provider of long-term, sub-acute, and specialty healthcare services The stock has a P/E of 15.99 and a PEG of 1.05.

Kindred Healthcare, Inc. (KND) is a Kentucky based company which operates long-term acute care hospitals that provide outpatient services, nursing care, and long term care. The stock has a P/E of f 15.72 and a PEG of 1.49.

Skilled Healthcare Group, Inc. (SKH) is a California based company operates long term care facilities and provides post acute care services. The stock has a P/E of f 16.01 and a PEG of 1.21.

National HealthCare Corporation (NHC) is a Tennessee based company which operates long-term health care centers, assisted living centers, and independent living centers. The stock has a P/E of 16.75 The company pays a yield of 1.60%.

Odyssey HealthCare, Inc. (ODSY) is a Texas based company which provides hospice care services. The stock has a P/E of 20.33 and a PEG of 1.61.

Sunrise Senior Living, Inc. (SRZ) is a Virginia based company provides independent and assisted living services to seniors. The stock has a P/E of 22.37 and a PEG of 2.01.

Manor Care, Inc. (HCR) is a Ohio based company which provides skilled nursing care, assisted living care, post-acute medical and rehabilitation care, hospice care, and home health care. The stock has a P/E of 28.01 and a PEG of 1.57 The company pays a yield of 1.10%.

Assisted Living Concepts, Inc. (ALC) is a Milwaukee based company which operates over 200 assisted living residences for seniors. The stock has a P/E of 43.62 and a PEG of 1.71.

Brookdale Senior Living, Inc. (BKD) is a Chicago based company which operates independent living facilities, assisted living facilities, retirement centers, and continuing care retirement communities. The stock has been generating negative earnings, but pays a yield of 5.10%.

Emeritus Corporation (ESC) is a Seattle based company which owns and operates assisted living, and Alzheimer's and dementia care residential communities for senior citizens. The stock has been generating negative earnings.
